PLAYER UPDATES Provided By SportsBuff.com
Player: Rashied Davis WR, Chicago Bears 10/05/08, Time: 3:42 pm
 Status:
Hot
News: With Brandon Lloyd out, Davis was the featured receiver for the Bears. He caught six balls for 97 yards.
 Analysis:

Davis had just nine catches in the first four games, so this was a really nice game for him. He'll go back to a reserve if Lloyd comes back, but he is a Bear receiver to keep an eye (if you not averse to that sort of thing). (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Kyle Orton QB, Chicago Bears 10/05/08, Time: 3:40 pm
 Status:
Hot
News: Orton had his finest day as the Bear QB on Sunday. He had a pair of TD's, 334 yards, and - most importantly - no interceptions.
 Analysis:

Orton has thrown seven TD passes in the last three weeks, but had four interceptions in Weeks Three and Four. Granted, the opponent was the Lions, but with Orton one must take what one will get. He's not terrible. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Kevin Jones RB, Chicago Bears 10/05/08, Time: 3:38 pm
 Status:
Steady
News: Jones had ten carries for 36 yards against his former team.
 Analysis:

Jones is not really fantasy relevant, but he is the handcuff to Matt Forte (if your league is deep enough to warrant such a thing). He has looked pretty good in a relief role. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Matt Forte RB, Chicago Bears 10/05/08, Time: 3:37 pm
 Status:
Steady
News: Forte did not do much as far as yards gained (just 36 on the ground and 25 through the air), but he scored two TD's.
 Analysis:

Forte has now gained fewer yards in each of the five Bear games. His 15 carries on Sunday were also his fewest. It matters little as long as he gets into the endzone, but Kevin Jones may be in line for more carries. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Brandon Lloyd WR, Chicago Bears 10/04/08, Time: 7:54 pm
 Status:
Out
News: Lloyd was unable to practice on his injured knee Friday and has been ruled out for Sunday.
 Analysis:

Too bad, a matchup with the Lions is always nice. Lloyd's absence shouldn't really hurt Kyle Orton's fantasy value for the game, though. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Reggie Bush RB, New Orleans Saints 10/01/08, Time: 10:24 am
News: Bush only registered 15 touches against a very average Niners D last week. The injury to Jeremy Shockey has allowed defenses to narrow the field on the speedy Bush.
 Analysis:

It gets no easier for Bush this week with the Vikings coming to town. The increased availability of Duce McAllister will help the Saints who are already missing Shockey and Marques Colston. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Brandon Lloyd WR, Chicago Bears 10/01/08, Time: 7:44 am
 Status:
Questionable
News: Lloyd might miss a couple weeks due to a left knee injury, according to the Sporting News.
 Analysis:

Lloyd was on the verge of becoming the Bears top receiver. Faint praise, I know, but he could be used in deeper leagues or as a bye replacement. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Matt Forte RB, Chicago Bears 09/30/08, Time: 12:30 pm
News: Forte has been very impressive to start the season. Last week he had 85 yards of total offense and has shown to be a 3-down back for the Bears.
 Analysis:

The fast track in Detroit should play nicely into Forte's hands this week. The Bear's win against the Eagles last Sunday seems to have proven that someone other than the Bears defense can be relied upon to score. Forte is a solid play this week. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Tommie Harris DT, Chicago Bears 09/29/08, Time: 11:06 pm
 Status:
Questionable
News: Harris ended up missing the Sunday night victory over the Eagles because of a knee injury after getting mad during the week about being asked too many questions about his hurting knee.
 Analysis:

Pair this absence with the fact that he has no sacks through three games, and this is a guy you don't want as an IDP. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Drew Brees QB, New Orleans Saints 09/28/08, Time: 8:37 pm
 Status:
Hot
News: Brees threw for 363 yards and three touchdowns in the victory over the Niners on Sunday.
 Analysis:

No Colston, no Shockey, no problem. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Deuce McAllister RB, New Orleans Saints 09/28/08, Time: 8:35 pm
News: McAllister got 20 carries in the victory over the Niners on Sunday and took them for 73 yards and a touchdown.
 Analysis:

Bye bye, Pierre Thomas' fantasy value ... at least until McAllister's next injury. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Robert Meachem WR, New Orleans Saints 09/28/08, Time: 4:10 pm
 Status:
Hot
News: Meachem caught just two passes on Sunday, but he took them for 99 yards and a touchdown.
 Analysis:

The long scores appear to be no fluke for the second-year receiver, and the game commentators said that today's was a play specifically designed for Meachem. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Lance Moore WR, New Orleans Saints 09/28/08, Time: 4:08 pm
 Status:
Hot
News: Moore enjoyed a huge day for the Saints on Sunday, hauling in seven passes for 101 yards and two touchdowns. It was the second straight game in which he made seven receptions.
 Analysis:

Moore stands to continue getting chances in New Orleans with so many injuries having struck the team's receivers. Keep him in mind. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Jeremy Shockey TE, New Orleans Saints 09/26/08, Time: 8:44 pm
 Status:
Out
News: Coach Sean Payton said this week that Shockey's sports hernia surgery was successful and that the team hopes to have him back as early as Week 6.
 Analysis:

Don't count on him being all the way back if he does return that quickly. We'll see how things look once Shockey gets back on the field, though. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Tommie Harris DT, Chicago Bears 09/26/08, Time: 8:17 pm
 Status:
Questionable
News: Harris did not practice on Friday because of a knee injury, but the Chicago Tribune reports that Harris expects to play Sunday night.
 Analysis:

It looks like we'll have to get used to Harris missing a lot of practice this year. It doesn't mean he won't be on the field on Sundays. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Brandon Lloyd WR, Chicago Bears 09/26/08, Time: 8:15 pm
 Status:
Questionable
News: Lloyd was a limited participant in practice Friday and is questionable for the Sunday night matchup with the Eagles.
 Analysis:

That should be enough for you to keep him on the bench in what should be a tough matchup anyway. (SportsBuff.com)

Player: Jeremy Shockey TE, New Orleans Saints 09/22/08, Time: 7:06 pm
 Status:
Out
News: ESPNews reports that Shockey will undergo sports hernia surgery and miss the next three to six weeks.
 Analysis:

The longer end of that timeframe would bump up against the Saints' Week 9 bye, so don't be surprised if Shockey stays out until Week 10. We'll see how he progresses, though. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Jeremy Shockey TE, New Orleans Saints 09/22/08, Time: 7:02 pm
 Status:
Out
News: Shockey will undergo surgery for a sports hernia and miss the next 3-6 weeks.
 Analysis:

Ouch for the Saints passing game, and ouch for Shockey. Those hurt. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Lance Briggs LB, Chicago Bears 09/21/08, Time: 11:30 pm
News: Briggs made six solo tackles, intercepted a pass and broke up three others on Sunday.
 Analysis:

It's nice to get a big day like that out of a top IDP pick, but it would be nicer if he could pump up his tackle totals a bit. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Charles Tillman DB, Chicago Bears 09/21/08, Time: 11:27 pm
 Status:
Hot
News: Tillman produced a game-high 10 solo tackles and 11 total in Sunday's loss to the Bucs. He also forced a fumble and broke up two passes.
 Analysis:

Sunday's was certainly the biggest performance so far for Tillman, but he has had solid fantasy outings every week so far. He's a top defensive-back option. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Roman Harper DB, New Orleans Saints 09/18/08, Time: 8:14 pm
 Status:
Probable
News: Harper missed Week 2 with a hamstring injury, but he was back on the practice field Wednesday and is expected to play Sunday.
 Analysis:

It's risky to start a guy coming off a hamstring injury, but Harper is good enough to take a chance on -- especially against the suddenly pass-happy Broncos. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Devin Hester WR, Chicago Bears 09/16/08, Time: 8:06 pm
 Status:
Questionable
News: The latest report from the Chicago Tribune has sources indicating that Hester's ribs are OK and that he should be able to go in Week 3.
 Analysis:

Now all he needs to do is prove that he's a receiver. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Tracy Porter DB, New Orleans Saints 09/16/08, Time: 6:35 am
News: The rookie corner ranked second on the team with eight solo tackles in the loss to Washington.
 Analysis:

Porter got plenty of work manning the side of the field where Santana Moss most often lines up. He has been useful in each of his first two pro games, but we'll have to see if he remains in the lineup when Randall Gay and Mike McKenzie are both healthy. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Jonathan Vilma LB, New Orleans Saints 09/16/08, Time: 6:32 am
 Status:
Hot
News: Vilma produced 16 total tackles (10 solo) and a pass breakup in the loss to Washington on Sunday.
 Analysis:

He's back. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Will Smith DE, New Orleans Saints 09/16/08, Time: 6:31 am
News: Smith notched his first sack of the season on Sunday.
 Analysis:

It would be nice to see Smith up his sack totals. Until he does, he sits toward the bottom of the top 20 IDP linemen. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Charles Tillman DB, Chicago Bears 09/15/08, Time: 10:01 pm
News: Tillman led the team with six solo tackles on Sunday -- the second straight game he finished with that number -- and picked off a pass.
 Analysis:

Tillman continues to be a solid IDP defensive back. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Roman Harper DB, New Orleans Saints 09/13/08, Time: 2:07 pm
 Status:
Out
News: The Saints' strong safety has been ruled out for this week.
 Analysis:

Harper would have been a worthwhile start, but his owners will obviously have to look elsewhere. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Brian Urlacher LB, Chicago Bears 09/09/08, Time: 9:41 am
News: Urlacher opened like his old self by leading the Bears with eight solo tackles.
 Analysis:

His back and neck issues coming into the year were worrisome, but if you have Urlacher, he should stay in your lineup as long as he's in Chicago's. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Tommie Harris DT, Chicago Bears 09/09/08, Time: 9:34 am
News: Harris contributed just one solo tackle against the Colts, but his colleagues Marcus Harrison and Dusty Dvoracek fared well inside. Harrison, a rookie, came away with a sack in his first pro game.
 Analysis:

The good all-around play at tackle is good news for Harris, as it will reportedly keep coaches rotating the players to keep everyone fresh. This should allow Harris to increase his production over the course of the season. He got dinged up a fair amount through his first few years. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Marcus Harrison DT, Chicago Bears 09/09/08, Time: 9:31 am
News: Harrison sacked Peyton Manning Sunday night in the rookie tackle's first NFL start.
 Analysis:

This might be better new for Tommie Harris than for Harrison. The play of the rookie and Dusty Dvoracek will keep the coaches rotating tackles to keep everyone fresh. Harrison was considered a first-round talent devalued by injury and off-field issues. He could emerge as a solid producer, though it's doubtful he'll turn into a regular fantasy option any time soon. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Alex Brown DE, Chicago Bears 09/09/08, Time: 9:29 am
News: Brown recorded a sack to go with two solo tackles against the Colts on Sunday night.
 Analysis:

Brown makes for a decent option down the list of linemen. He won't be a big producer, but he'll put up the occasional sack and forced fumble, as well as solid tackle numbers for a lineman. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Charles Grant DE, New Orleans Saints 09/08/08, Time: 12:57 pm
News: After a tumultuous off-season that presented a stabbing and criminal charges within the same incident, Grant went out and recorded a sack in the first game.
 Analysis:

His sack totals have been weak in recent seasons, so don't get too hopeful. A rebuilt line could help him turn things around, though. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Bobby McCray DE, New Orleans Saints 09/08/08, Time: 12:55 pm
News: McCray didn't disappoint his new team, collecting a sack in his first regular-season game.
 Analysis:

Unfortunately for us, the one-sack, one-tackle line is pretty typical for him. McCray's fantasy value will be weak when he isn't facing a particularly vulnerable pass offense. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Jonathan Vilma LB, New Orleans Saints 09/08/08, Time: 12:54 pm
News: The new middle linebacker led the team with nine total tackles (seven solo) in his regular-season debut as a Saint. A knee injury cost Vilma the second half of 2007.
 Analysis:

Look for a big year from the former league tackle champ. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Scott Fujita LB, New Orleans Saints 09/08/08, Time: 12:52 pm
News: Fujita made seven solo tackles and picked off a pass in the victory over Tampa on Sunday.
 Analysis:

The strongside linebacker is good for a day like that every now and then, making him a solid starter for, say, a third linebacker slot. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Matt Forte RB, Chicago Bears 09/08/08, Time: 10:03 am
 Status:
Hot
News: Forte had about as impressive a debut as you can ask for, rushing for 123 yards and a score on 23 carries in the Bears win over the Colts Sunday night. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)
Player: Devin Hester WR, Chicago Bears 09/08/08, Time: 9:51 am
 Status:
Steady
News: Hester caught one pass for seven yards in Chicago's win at Indianapolis Sunday night. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)
Player: Roman Harper DB, New Orleans Saints 09/08/08, Time: 6:55 am
News: Harper left Sunday's victory over the Bucs with an unspecified injury. The only reports at this point say it isn't expected to be serious.
 Analysis:

Harper had an OK day, with five tackles, before leaving. We'll have to watch his status as the week progresses. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Drew Brees QB, New Orleans Saints 09/07/08, Time: 5:21 pm
 Status:
Hot
News: Brees threw for 342 yards and three touchdowns in the Saints win over the Bucs Sunday. He completed 23 of 32 passes.
 Analysis:

Probably just what you expected from Brees. And keep in mind, the offense was fairly balanced this week. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Marques Colston WR, New Orleans Saints 09/07/08, Time: 5:00 pm
 Status:
Steady
News: Colston had three catches for 26 yards in the Saints win in Week 1.
 Analysis:

Probably not what you want to see out of a No. 1 receiver, but no need to panic quite yet. Colston's numbers will come around. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Jeremy Shockey TE, New Orleans Saints 09/07/08, Time: 4:56 pm
 Status:
Steady
News: Shockey caught six passes for 54 yards in the Saints win over the Bucs Sunday.
 Analysis:

Shockey will continue to get comfortable in the offense and should become a fantasy force for the Saints. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Reggie Bush RB, New Orleans Saints 09/07/08, Time: 4:46 pm
 Status:
Hot
News: Bush looked a lot like the player everyone thought he was when he got drafted three years ago in the Saints debut Sunday. He had 51 rushing yards and 112 receiving yards and a touchdown in the win over the Bucs.
 Analysis:

Most of his yardage came in the second half, including a 26-yard gain on the ground, which established a new career best. He scored on a 46-yard screen pass. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Tommie Harris DT, Chicago Bears 09/04/08, Time: 10:55 am
News: Sporting News Today reports that Harris said not to believe the Chicago Tribune's report of concerns about his knee. "Just watch me," Harris was quoted as saying regarding his status for the opener.
 Analysis:

This is somewhat reassuring, but I still don't like him against the Colts. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Devin Hester WR, Chicago Bears 09/03/08, Time: 4:05 pm
 Status:
Steady
News: Hester will start at WR during the Bears season-opener Sunday.
 Analysis:

Take it how you want, but just remember Kyle Orton is his quarterback. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Tommie Harris DT, Chicago Bears 09/03/08, Time: 12:52 pm
 Status:
Questionable
News: The Chicago Tribune reports that an unnamed team source said the training staff is worried about a sore knee that has kept Harris off the field for two weeks. The team has said nothing about an injury to its star tackle, and when Harris missed the final exhibition, Lovie Smith said it was precautionary.
 Analysis:

It's impossible for us to know who might be mistaken or lying in this case, but the report is certainly enough to keep Harris out of fantasy lineups against the Colts. We'll see what happens after that. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Brandon McGowan DB, Chicago Bears 09/02/08, Time: 11:56 am
News: Although McGowan has reportedly slipped behind Kevin Payne at strong safety on the depth chart, the Daily Herald reports the the team has yet to officially decide on a starter.
 Analysis:

Payne seems to be the likely choice, but the lingering could mean he'll have a short leash. In reality, both will probably see playing time and limit each other's value. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Kevin Payne DB, Chicago Bears 09/02/08, Time: 11:48 am
News: The Daily Herald reports that although Payne apparently sits ahead of Brandon McGowan on the depth chart now, the team hasn't officially set its lineup for Sunday night's opener.
 Analysis:

Payne will probably be there, but the uncertainty at this point could mean his starting status is tenuous. Underperform and McGowan waits in the wings. Don't consider Payne a strong IDP option until he shows he should be. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Kevin Payne DB, Chicago Bears 08/31/08, Time: 4:30 pm
 Status:
Hot
News: Payne has beaten Brandon McGowan out for the starting strong safety job.
 Analysis:

Payne's been on track for a starting job ever since he impressed coaches in his rookie camp last year. He draws a tough first assignment in the Colts, though. Payne could be a decent IDP sleeper, but I'd be lying if I said I knew what kind of production to expect. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Brandon McGowan DB, Chicago Bears 08/31/08, Time: 4:27 pm
 Status:
Cold
News: McGowan has reportedly lost the starting strong safety job to second-year player Kevin Payne.
 Analysis:

This move has been rumored all summer. The coaches were impressed with Payne when he was a rookie, and it will be interesting to see how he acquits himself. McGowan has been a decent IDP when he has started, but he'll obviously now need an injury to a starter to present any IDP value. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Jeremy Shockey TE, New Orleans Saints 08/30/08, Time: 1:11 pm
 Status:
Steady
News: Despite not playing in any of the Saints' preseason games, Coach Sean Payton feels Shockey will be ready to play in the season opener.
 Analysis:

Shockey is still on the mend from his broken leg, but was being held out of the preseaon as a precaution. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)
