PLAYER UPDATES Provided By SportsBuff.com
Player: David Tyree WR, N.Y. Giants Giants 08/16/08, Time: 1:09 pm
 Status:
Steady
News: Tyree, he of the "helmet catch" in the Super Bowl, said that there is a good chance he could start the season on the PUP list.
 Analysis:

Tyree didn't practice in camp is fighting for a roster spot. The Giants have lots of receivers fighting for spots behind Plaxico Burress, Steve Smith, and Amani Toomer. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: A.J. Hawk LB, Green Bay Packers 08/14/08, Time: 10:51 pm
News: The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that Hawk will miss Saturday's exhibition game with an unspecified chest injury. Coach Mike McCarthy says it's nothing serious.
 Analysis:

At this point, it doesn't seem like anything worth worrying about. If he misses practice next week, we can start watching more closely. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Ryan Grant RB, Green Bay Packers 08/14/08, Time: 6:29 pm
 Status:
Steady
News: Grant missed practice again Thursday because of a lingering hamstrins issue.
 Analysis:

This is exactly the kind of injury you get when you don't report to camp on time. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Greg Jennings WR, Green Bay Packers 08/12/08, Time: 8:57 am
News: Jennings was held out of the Packers first preseaon game Monday night with a nagging knee injury.
 Analysis:

The injury isn't thought to be serious and the move was just precautionary. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Aaron Rodgers QB, Green Bay Packers 08/12/08, Time: 8:48 am
 Status:
Steady
News: Rodgers, not that anyone was watching, completed 9 of 15 passes for 117 yards and a TD and INT in Green Bay's preseason game Monday night.
 Analysis:

All things considered, Rodgers looked poised and solid in his first outing, leading the Packers to 10 points in the first quarter. The bad news--he did it against the Bengals. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Brandon Jackson RB, Green Bay Packers 08/12/08, Time: 8:45 am
 Status:
Steady
News: Jackson ran for 44 yards on six carries in Green Bay's preseason opener Monday.
 Analysis:

He's a runner, not a fighter. Jackson still had problems picking up the blitz, as Aaron Rodgers got hit twice when Jackson failed to make his block. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: James Jones WR, Green Bay Packers 08/12/08, Time: 8:41 am
 Status:
Steady
News: Jones caught three passes for 44 yards and a touchdown, a nifty 30-yard reception in which he lost his helmet while running toward the end zone.
 Analysis:

Jones solidified his hold on the No. 3 receiver spot for the Packers. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Brian Brohm QB, Green Bay Packers 08/12/08, Time: 8:36 am
 Status:
Steady
News: Brohm looked a little shaky in the Packers preseason debut Monday, completing 8 of 17 passes for 70 yards and an INT. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)
Player: Plaxico Burress WR, N.Y. Giants Giants 08/11/08, Time: 1:33 pm
 Status:
Steady
News: Burress is steadfast that he will not practice until his ankle is 100 percent healed.....
 Analysis:

or he gets a new mega-contract, which is what he's really after. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Brett Favre QB, Green Bay Packers 08/06/08, Time: 12:49 pm
 Status:
Steady
News: Your daily dose of Favre, SportsBuff style....Favre is apparently open to a trade to Tampa or even the New York Jets, according to his agent.
 Analysis:

Still will seem odd not to see No. 4 in a Packers uniform. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Plaxico Burress WR, N.Y. Giants Giants 08/06/08, Time: 12:43 pm
 Status:
Steady
News: Burress is still hopeful that he can get a new contract before the end of camp, but nothing is imminent, reports the Newark Star-Ledger.
 Analysis:

Burress also hasn't been practicing because of an ankle injury. He won't play in the preseason opener Thursday night. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Brett Favre QB, Green Bay Packers 08/05/08, Time: 1:36 pm
 Status:
Steady
News: Favre told a pool of reporters Tuesday that last night's meeting with Coach Mike McCarthy resulted in a "stalemate" and that nothing was really accomplished.
 Analysis:

Favre went on to say that he didn't want to be a distraction to the team in camp and will not practice on Tuesday. This situation is far from over, apparently. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Mario Manningham WR, N.Y. Giants Giants 08/05/08, Time: 1:22 pm
 Status:
Out
News: Manningham, who has missed a majority of camp, has bleeding in his quadricep.
 Analysis:

Manningham is looking more and more like a candidate for the IR, which would be a lost season for the rookie. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Brett Favre QB, Green Bay Packers 08/05/08, Time: 7:33 am
 Status:
Steady
News: Favre and Coach Mike McCarthy had a closed-door, five-plus hour meeting to try and hammer out a plan for the anticipated QB competition in camp.
 Analysis:

We're really not sure what transpired, because McCarthy cancelled his scheduled 9:15 press conference to tell the media. He will address the team and press later Tuesday. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Nick Collins DB, Green Bay Packers 08/04/08, Time: 8:55 pm
News: Pro Football Weekly reports that Collins will have to fend off second-year teammate Aaron Rouse if he wants to keep his free-safety job.
 Analysis:

Rouse started three games last season when Collins was hurt and looks like he could be a better fantasy option. We'll see how this one plays out. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Aaron Rouse DB, Green Bay Packers 08/04/08, Time: 8:53 pm
News: Pro Football Weekly reports that Rouse is mounting a serious challenge to Nick Collins' starter status at free safety. Rouse reportedly just needs to improve his open-field tackling to overtake the incumbent.
 Analysis:

Rouse's two picks in limited action as a rookie last year (including three starts) were more than Collins has grabbed in two of his three pro seasons. Collins candidacy for one of the defense's two helmet radio receivers makes this suprising, but it's a move that appeared destined to happen at points last season. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Plaxico Burress WR, N.Y. Giants Giants 08/04/08, Time: 8:02 am
 Status:
Questionable
News: Burress was able to do some light running during Giants camp Sunday night, but still hasn't practiced with the team.
 Analysis:

His ankle isn't healing as quickly as he hoped, but Burress has proven he can adapt to game speed without much practice. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Brett Favre QB, Green Bay Packers 08/04/08, Time: 7:11 am
 Status:
Hot
News: The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, citing sources familiar with the process, reports that the Packers have informed the Minnesota Vikings that Favre is available in a trade.
 Analysis:

And the drama continues....Favre is expected to report to Packers camp at 1 pm Monday after arrving in Green Bay Sunday night. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Aaron Rodgers QB, Green Bay Packers 08/04/08, Time: 7:07 am
 Status:
Steady
News: Rodgers completed 7 of 20 passes for 84 yards, no TD's and one INT in the Packers Fan Fest scrimmage Sunday night.
 Analysis:

Hello, Mr. Favre. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Brett Favre QB, Green Bay Packers 08/03/08, Time: 10:05 am
 Status:
Hot
News: Ed Werder of ESPN is reporting that Favre has been reinstated by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and will immediately fly to Green Bay and join the Packers Sunday night.
 Analysis:

Werder also is reporting that Favre is prepared to be the backup for Aaron Rodgers this season if the team does not release or trade him. So Favre, holder of many of the NFL's all-time marks for QB's, looks like he may become a $12 million dollar backup unless he gets dealt. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Ryan Grant RB, Green Bay Packers 08/03/08, Time: 10:01 am
 Status:
Steady
News: Grant has ended his holdout and agreed to a new four-year deal that could be worth up to $30 million.
 Analysis:

Good news for the Packers in signing a budding star. It will also help alleviate any more of a media circus that already surrounds the team. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Jordy Nelson WR, Green Bay Packers 08/03/08, Time: 9:50 am
 Status:
Steady
News: Though Nelson has impressed coaches with his work ethic, fundamentals and understanding of the offense, he still looks like the No. 4 receiver for the Packers at best. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)
Player: Ryan Grant RB, Green Bay Packers 08/02/08, Time: 12:05 pm
 Status:
Steady
News: Grant is apparently seeking a contract in the six-year, $40 million range and is continuing to holdout.
 Analysis:

Grant started seven games last season and was an integral part of the offense and run to the NFC Championship. The Packers obviously don't feel he's worth that kind of dough, but given the other mess they are in, how many off-field distractions can they handle before it affects the locker room and the regular season? (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Brett Favre QB, Green Bay Packers 08/02/08, Time: 11:59 am
 Status:
Steady
News: Ed Werder of ESPN is reporting that Favre is leaning against taking the $20 million retirement buyout that Green Bay offered him Thursday.
 Analysis:

I wish I could be inside Favre's mind like Werder and know what he thinks. But it would be surprising if Favre opted for the money. He said he wants to play, and taking the money would in essence make him a sellout. If he can't play in Green Bay, however, it'd be tough to see him in another uniform. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Brett Favre QB, Green Bay Packers 08/01/08, Time: 7:53 am
 Status:
Steady
News: In the never-ending saga, Favre has nixed any chance of a trade to the Jets and is now reportedly seriously considering accepting the Packers offer of $20 million to stay retired.
 Analysis:

Favre cancelled his chartered jet to Green Bay, so he won't be at camp Friday. Roger Goodell has given the Packers another day to fix this and still hasn't granted Favre his reinstatement. We shall keep you posted as things develop. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Ahmad Bradshaw RB, N.Y. Giants Giants 07/31/08, Time: 5:26 pm
 Status:
Steady
News: Bradshaw apparently will have to serve another 30-day jail sentence next summer because of a probation violation, according to the Bristol Herald-Courier.
 Analysis:

Bradshaw served a 30-day sentence this summer for the same violation. He could face suspension by the league, but that appears unlikely. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Brandon Jackson RB, Green Bay Packers 07/31/08, Time: 5:13 pm
 Status:
Hot
News: With Ryan Grant still holding out, Jackson has looked very good in Packers camp, so much so that the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel suggests the two could split time once Grant returns.
 Analysis:

Not sure about all that, but if Grant has a protracted holdout, Jackson could certainly start a few games until Grant's legs are game-ready. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Brett Favre QB, Green Bay Packers 07/31/08, Time: 4:59 pm
 Status:
Steady
News: According to various reports, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is going to wait another day before deciding on Favre's reinstatement, hoping the QB and the Packers can work out some resolution.
 Analysis:

Meanwhile, there are also reports that Favre has chartered a plane to fly him to Green Bay so he can attend practice with the Packers Friday. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Steve Smith WR, N.Y. Giants Giants 07/31/08, Time: 4:52 pm
 Status:
Steady
News: Smith has returned to practice with the Giants after missing some practices because of a strained groin.
 Analysis:

Smith is trying to win the No. 2 role over Amani Toomer, but that is unlikely. He'll probably be the Giants No. 3 receiver. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Brett Favre QB, Green Bay Packers 07/31/08, Time: 7:56 am
 Status:
Steady
News: Team President Mark Murphy reportedly offered Favre $20 million over the next 10 years to stay retired, according to WTMJ TV in Milwaukee.
 Analysis:

Wow. And Favre could be in Packers camp Friday. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Brett Favre QB, Green Bay Packers 07/30/08, Time: 6:17 pm
 Status:
Steady
News: Favre faxed in his signed reinstatement letter to the league office Wednesday, but Roger Goodell wasn't going to take any action on the matter immediately.
 Analysis:

Once Favre gets resinstated, the Packers have 24 hours to add him to their active roster. Or, they can release or trade him. Team President Mark Murphy flew to Mississippi Wednesday to meet with Favre and his agent about options, but apparently nothing was settled. Favre could show up at Packers training camp Friday. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Brett Favre QB, Green Bay Packers 07/30/08, Time: 7:32 am
 Status:
Hot
News: Favre has faxed his reinstatement letter to the NFL office.
 Analysis:

This just makes his comeback official. Now, the Packers have to let him come to camp, release him, or trade him. We doubt you'll hear anything more about this situation for quite some time. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Brett Favre QB, Green Bay Packers 07/29/08, Time: 3:48 pm
 Status:
Steady
News: The Packers haven't received an offer that has knocked their socks off for Favre, who still hasn't sent his re-instatement letter to the league office.
 Analysis:

Brett, I love you, but stay retired. If you aren't going to be a Packer, don't play. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Danny Clark LB, N.Y. Giants Giants 07/28/08, Time: 7:59 am
News: Sporting News Today reports that Clark has taken the first-team reps while Gerris Wilkinson nurses a nagging knee injury. The veteran joined the team as a free agent this past off-season.
 Analysis:

Clark doesn't have the physical potential of Wilkinson, but the younger 'backer has frustrated coaches by not claiming the starting job before now. This injury certainly doesn't help. Clark is a mediocre IDP option at best if he beats out Wilkinson. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Gerris Wilkinson LB, N.Y. Giants Giants 07/28/08, Time: 7:57 am
News: Sporting News Today's Giants correspondent reports that Wilkinson has yet to practice in camp because of a knee injury that has nagged him since last season. Veteran Danny Clark has taken the reps in his place.
 Analysis:

The two will battle for the weakside job in camp. Wilkinson failed to win the gig last season, when he was beaten out by Kawika Mitchell. He's certainly more athletic than Clark, but Clark brings far more experience and a headstart to workouts. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Plaxico Burress WR, N.Y. Giants Giants 07/28/08, Time: 7:05 am
News: Burress is suffering from a minor ankle injury and hasn't been able to take part in camp.
 Analysis:

Coach Tom Coughlin feels Burress should be practicing with the team, but a team doctor confirmed Burress did have an injury and wasn't just sitting out because of a contract dispute. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Brian Brohm QB, Green Bay Packers 07/28/08, Time: 6:46 am
News: The Packers signed Brohm to a multi-year contract just in time for training camp.
 Analysis:

Who knows, maybe Brohm can eventually win the starting job in Green Bay. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Ryan Grant RB, Green Bay Packers 07/28/08, Time: 6:41 am
News: Grant is officially a holdout from training camp, refusing to report after a new contract could not be agreed to. His agent called the team's latest offer "insulting."
 Analysis:

Grant holds all the cards here. One thing new QB (maybe) Aaron Rodgers needs is a reliable running back to help ease the transistion. It would seem the Packers would want to get a deal done with Grant soon. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Brett Favre QB, Green Bay Packers 07/28/08, Time: 6:35 am
News: Favre has signed his reinstatement papers but has yet to send them into the NFL office.
 Analysis:

Favre has also agreed to give GM Ted Thompson a few more days to try and trade him. Technically, Favre can't report to camp until the league approves his reinstatement. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Mario Manningham WR, N.Y. Giants Giants 07/28/08, Time: 6:27 am
News: The New York Daily news is reporting that Manningham is having difficulty separating from DB's so far during training camp.
 Analysis:

This seems to be a recurring theme with Manningham. He also had the same problem during OTA's. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Brandon Chillar LB, Green Bay Packers 07/25/08, Time: 10:13 am
News: The multiyear free-agent contract worth several million dollars that the Packers gave Chillar this off-season seemed to indicate he would at least fight for the starting strongside job. The sizable contract extension given to Brady Poppinga on Thursday, however, seems to indicate otherwise.
 Analysis:

If Chillar clearly outperforms Poppinga, then things might change. When a team gives a guy $17 million just a couple of months after signing another player at his position, though, it shows the team has confidence in the incumbent. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Brady Poppinga LB, Green Bay Packers 07/25/08, Time: 10:09 am
News: The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that the Packers agreed to an extension with Poppinga that will lock him up through 2012 and pay him about $17 million overall.
 Analysis:

The free-agent signing of Brandon Chillar drove speculation that Poppinga could be on his way out of the starting lineup. This seems to put that to rest, at least for this season. Poppinga, though, isn't much of a fantasy option. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Derrick Ward RB, N.Y. Giants Giants 07/24/08, Time: 3:46 pm
News: The Giants will limit Ward to one practice a day during camp to make sure he can sustain contact to his leg, which was broken last season.
 Analysis:

Ward is behind Brandon Jacobs on the depth chart and maybe even Ahmad Bradshaw. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Plaxico Burress WR, N.Y. Giants Giants 07/24/08, Time: 3:44 pm
News: Burress showed up for the start of Giants training camp Thursday.
 Analysis:

Burress was hoping for a new contract before camp started and at one time had threatened to hold out. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Ryan Grant RB, Green Bay Packers 07/23/08, Time: 4:17 pm
News: Grant will not report to training camp on time unless he has a long term contract in place.
 Analysis:

Camp starts Sunday. Grant's agent is involved in ongoing talks, but says that a deal is not imminent. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: David Carr QB, N.Y. Giants Giants 07/23/08, Time: 4:11 pm
News: QB Coach Chris Palmer told the New York Daily News that Carr needs to settle down when he gets in the pocket.
 Analysis:

Really? It seems that Carr will be just fine standing still on the sidelines, holding Eli Manning's clipboard. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Ahmad Bradshaw RB, N.Y. Giants Giants 07/23/08, Time: 4:09 pm
News: The Giants don't think that Bradshaw faces any league-imposed discipline for spending 30 days in jail over the summer because of a probation violation. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)
Player: Steve Smith WR, N.Y. Giants Giants 07/23/08, Time: 3:35 pm
News: Smith could see his catches increase in the wake of the Jeremy Shockey trade.
 Analysis:

Smith came on at the end of 2007 and in the playoffs. He'll probably be the No. 3 receiver for the Giants. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Brett Favre QB, Green Bay Packers 07/23/08, Time: 3:32 pm
News: Favre reportedly contacted Minnesota Head Coach Brad Childress when it looked like he would not be welcome back to the Packers, which is the basis for the tampering charge the Packers filed.
 Analysis:

And it continues to get more interesting...(Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)

Player: Brett Favre QB, Green Bay Packers 07/22/08, Time: 3:38 pm
News: Adam Schefter of the NFL Network is reporting that the Packers have called around to a few teams who might be interested in trading for Favre.
 Analysis:

Which teams they are, Schefter didn't say. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)
