QB Kolb officially signs with Buffalo Bills

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) - Quarterback Kevin Kolb arrived in Buffalo on Monday to officially sign his two-year contract with the Bills and begin pursuing his latest shot at an NFL starting job.

The Bills announced the signing a little over a week after the sixth-year veteran agreed to a two-year contract potentially worth more than $12 million. Kolb was scheduled to be made available to the media later in the day.

``We wanted to add some veteran experience to the quarterback position on our roster, and we think we've added a good one by signing Kevin,'' general manager Buddy Nix said in a statement released by the team. ``He's a player we had targeted since he became a free agent, and he should be a strong candidate in the competition for the starting quarterback position.''

Kolb spent the past two seasons in Arizona, where injuries hampered his opportunity to prove himself as a starter. The Cardinals were left with little choice but to release Kolb on March 15 in a move that came before they were set to pay him a $2 million roster bonus. The decision saved the team about $7 million in salary cap space.

In Buffalo, he gets the opportunity to compete for the starting job with Tarvaris Jackson, who was re-signed to a one-year contract in February. The Bills released Ryan Fitzpatrick last month.

The competition could get even more crowded in Buffalo. Nix has already expressed an intention to select a quarterback high in the draft this month. Questions remain whether they'll do so with their first pick, eighth overall.

Much like Fitzpatrick did in his four seasons in Buffalo, Kolb has struggled with consistency. Kolb has a 9-12 record as a starter, and has completed 59.5 percent of his passes, while throwing 28 touchdowns and 25 interceptions in 34 career games.

He spent his first four seasons with Philadelphia after being selected by the Eagles in second round of the 2007 draft.

The Cardinals were counting on Kolb to become their franchise quarterback after acquiring him in a trade with Philadelphia in the summer of 2011. As part of the trade, they signed Kolb to a five-year, $63 million contract with $20 million guaranteed.

Kolb, however, got off to a 1-6 start and had trouble adapting to coach Ken Whisenhunt's offense. He then hurt his toe and was eventually sidelined for the rest of the season because of a concussion.

Last season, Kolb helped the Cardinals get off to a 4-0 start before being sidelined for the rest of the season with torn rib cartilage.
