LANDOVER, Md. (AP) - Robert Griffin III's top backup, Kirk Cousins, left the Washington Redskins' exhibition game Monday night after spraining his right foot on a run.
Starting in the preseason while Griffin comes back from right knee surgery, Cousins left the game against the Pittsburgh Steelers early in the second quarter.
Before halftime, the Redskins announced Cousins would not return to the game.
On the second of two consecutive plays on which he ran the ball, Cousins was dragged down along the sideline by linebacker Lawrence Timmons.
Cousins immediately grabbed his right foot. He rose and walked toward the huddle with a hitch in his step, then sat down on the grass.
He was examined on the field and on the sideline by Dr. James Andrews - the team physician who operated on Griffin in January - before walking to the locker room.
Third-stringer Rex Grossman entered to play quarterback for Washington.
Before departing, Cousins went 2 for 3 for 19 yards passing. He ran twice for 14 yards.
Cousins was taken in the fourth round of the 2012 draft, after Washington picked Griffin with the No. 2 overall selection.
