2018 AFC East Division Odds

The AFC East has been dominated by the New England Patriots in recent years, as they have won the division in each of the last nine seasons and in 14 of the last 15 years. If you think the Patriots will make it 10 straight AFC East division titles in 2018, you have to lay big money. The other three teams in the AFC East are big longshots, with the Buffalo Bills the second choice at +975.

Let’s look at the latest odds and AFC East predictions.

Odd to Win 2018 AFC East  - per BetDSI
New England Patriots -1170
Buffalo Bills +975
New York Jets +1215
Miami Dolphins +1435

The dominance of the Patriots in the AFC East will eventually end, but predicting the Patriots to fail when they still have Bill Belichick as their head coach and Tom Brady as their quarterback seems foolish. New England is coming off a Super Bowl loss, so they will be motivated to get back to the big game. The Patriots still have a very potent offense with Brady at the helm and they are always good on defense under Belichick.

Oddsmakers set the win total for the Patriots at 11.5 and it is not hard to see New England winning at least 12 games.

If you want to take a longshot to win the AFC East, which team do you want to go with?  The Bills are the second choice in terms of the odds at +975. That is somewhat surprising, considering the win total for the team is just six for the 2018 season. The Jets have a win total of 6.5, while the Dolphins have a win total of 7. In terms of value, the Dolphins would seem to be the best choice to win the AFC East. The problem with taking Miami is that they have to beat the Patriots and that simply doesn’t happen very often.

The Dolphins could be undervalued somewhat entering the 2018 season. They will bring back QB Ryan Tannehill who missed last season due to injury and they look to have a possible breakout star in running back Kenyan Drake.  If there is one team that could surprise in the AFC East it just might be the Dolphins.  They need some help to win the division, as the Patriots would have to suffer injuries, but eventually the New England dominance is going to end and Miami might be the team to pick up the pieces if it happens in 2018.

The Bills have two new quarterbacks, as AJ McCarron comes over from Cincinnati, while Buffalo took Josh Allen in the NFL Draft, but the Bills still have holes on both sides of the ball.  The Bills have LeSean McCoy running the ball, but they don’t have much offensive talent to help out Allen in his rookie season. The defense for the Bills isn’t anything special, as they ranked 26th in total yards allowed last season. It is hard to make a case for taking Buffalo to win the AFC East in 2018.

The Jets also have a rookie quarterback, as Sam Darnold is the heir apparent to Josh McCown. The Jets don’t do anything particularly well, as they were 28th in total yards last season and they were 25th in yards allowed.

2018 AFC East Predictions

It is really difficult to see anything other than another New England division title in 2018.  The Patriots have won at least 12 games in each of the last eight seasons. They have won the AFC East every year since 2008. The only way the Patriots would fail to win the AFC East would be if Brady gets hurt or suffers a massive drop in his level of play.  And even then the Patriots might still win this division because the rest of the teams are not very good.

If any team is to upset the apple cart and give the Patriots a challenge it could be the Dolphins. They might be in the best position to win the division if everything falls apart for New England. And keep in mind that the only team other than the Patriots to win the AFC East since 2003 was the Dolphins in 2008.  The Bills and Jets don’t look to be serious threats to the Patriots this season.
