|
Cleveland 10-6 |
Cleveland only has one pick remaining in this year's draft, but that didn't stop GM Phil Savage from rebuilding his defense. Picking up Shaun Rogers and Corey Williams means the Browns should be able to stop the run much more effectively this season. And they picked up Donte Stallworth to enhance an already potent offensive attack. The price for getting Rogers from Detroit was Leigh Bodden, which hurts the secondary a lot. The only questionable move Savage made was overpaying Derek Anderson, but I've been wrong before. |

N.Y. Jets 4-12 |
Aggression has been the name of the game for the Jets during the free agent period. They bolstered their offensive line by signing Pittsburgh stalwart, Alan Faneca. New York also upgraded its defense with the additions of Kris Jenkins from the Panthers and linebacker Calvin Pace from the Cards. The odds are long that the Jets will make the playoffs in 2008, but they're definitely putting the right pieces in for future runs. |

|
Philadelphia 8-8 |
Philly may have lost out on the Randy Moss sweepstakes, but they've still done well for itself. The Eagles upgraded their secondary with the signing of Asante Samuel from New England. However, their top signing could very well be d-end Chris Clemons from Oakland. Clemons pulled in eight sacks last year for the Raiders and is much cheaper than paying the aging Jevon Kearse. |

|
Miami 1-15 |
Let's get something right out of the way; the Dolphins are not going to be playoff bound in 2008. With that being said, you can bet Miami will be much improved in its first season of the Bill Parcells era. The 'Phins have signed eight free agents since the period opened and got d-tackle Jason Ferguson from Dallas. Given all the upgrades on defense, you can bet Parcells's crew will be focusing more on the offense in the draft. |

|
Minnesota 8-8 |
The Vikings knew they needed a deep threat, so they paid big cash to Bernard Berrian from Chicago. They knew they had to get better in the secondary and did so with the signing of Madieu Williams. Now Minnesota has to figure out how it wants to tackle the defensive line during the off-season. I know that Brad Childress wants to keep Chester Taylor, but the chance of trading him for a few picks or a solid d-end could prove too tempting. |

|
Carolina 7-9 |
The Panthers took a risk on David Carr and were smart enough to know it just wasn't going to work out and cut him. Meanwhile, they brought back Muhsin Muhammad to compliment Steve Smith as the No. 2 receiver. They also made sure the o-line wouldn't be an issue by making Jordan Gross their franchise player and re-signing Travelle Wharton. I'm not sure I like Carolina letting go of DeShaun Foster, but DeAngelo Williams did prove he could handle being the sole backfield last season. |

|
Jacksonville 11-5 |
The Jags upgraded at wide receiver by picking up Jerry Porter and trading for Troy Williamson. Porter is a gamble because of his well documented tirades in Oakland. Meanwhile, Williamson has been a backup for the most part in the NFL. If both shots pay off, then David Garrard will be able to flourish under center. Jacksonville also came up with a solid defensive acquisition in defensive back Drayton Florence. This could be the Jaguars best chance at capturing the AFC South. |

|
Dallas 13-3 |
The Cowboys have not lost anyone of consequence during the off-season outside of Ferguson going to Miami via trade. Dallas was able to keep Flozell Adams on the o-line, L.P. LaDouceur to anchor the defensive front and franchised Ken Hamlin at safety. The 'Boys are even getting a low risk-high reward season out of Zach Thomas, who signed a one-year contract to prove he can still play. Outside of who they'll keep between Marian Barber or Julius Jones, the Cowboys should still be the class of the NFC East. |
| 9 |
|
New Orleans 7-9 |
The Saints knew they needed to get better on defense. It's safe to say that they accomplished that mission so far by getting Jonathan Vilma, Randall Gay and Bobby McCray. Losing center Jeff Faine to Tampa Bay does hurt, but they should be able to find a decent substitute via free agency or the draft. |
| 10 |
|
Buffalo 7-9 |
The Bills haven't done much on the free agent market, but they've made the most of it. The trade for Marcus Stroud from Jacksonville some immediate d-line help. Meanwhile, inking Kawika Mitchell from the Giants allows Buffalo a chance to go forward knowing that Paul Posluszny won't be expected to hold down the fort in the middle. |
| 11 |
|
Detroit 7-9 |
Detroit improved its pass defense by trading for Leigh Bodden and signing Dwight Smith. Bodden comes at a cost by giving up Shaun Rogers's seven sacks on the defensive front, but they'll use a draft pick to fill his spot on the roster. Now they need to find ways to make the offense run more efficiently. |

|
Atlanta 4-12 |
It certainly looks like the Falcons have found their footing after all the turmoil they went through last season. Dropping Warrick Dunn for Michael Turner in the backfield is a smart move for Atlanta. As was re-signing Chris Redman at quarterback, even though he's not really as mobile as they'd like. And installing Ben Hartsock at the tight end position will give Turner another quality blocker as well. The Falcons won't be a contender in the NFC South, but they'll be improved. |
| 13 |
|
Indianapolis 13-3 |
The Colts really didn't do too much in the way of free agency, but their off-season has been a success. Indy re-signed Bob Sanders and locked up Dallas Clark to a long term deal as well. There is a good chance they'll draft a defensive tackle to replace Booger McFarland. |
| 14 |
|
Tennessee 10-6 |
Tennessee took care of its biggest issue by making Albert Haynesworth its franchise player. The Titans also gave Vince Young another outlet for passes in Alge Crumpler. The former Atlanta standout has experience in dealing with a mobile QB and is used to picking up the majority of passes. Still a little work to do in Nashville, but they're on the right track. |
| 15 |
|
San Francisco 5-11 |
The 'Niners have made a couple of nice moves, particularly under center. San Fran liked what they saw in Shaun Hill by signing him in early February. And Mike Martz is bringing in J.T. O'Sullivan from Detroit to compete with Hill and Alex "little hands" Smith. Regardless of who ends up as the starting QB, they'll get a top-shelf receiver to connect with in Isaac Bruce. The 49ers also picked up a suitable backup to Frank Gore at running back in DeShaun Foster. Now what are they doing to help that offensive line? |

|
St. Louis 3-13 |
The Rams have lots of issues to take care of this off-season. However, they have made one good signing in replacing the retired Jeff Wilkins with Seattle's Josh Brown as the kicker. I know that it isn't much of a start to the Rams' wheeling and dealing, but it's a positive. |
| 17 |
|
Denver 7-9 |
Denver is willing to give Ebenezer Ekuban and John Lynch another chance to make its defense respectable again. However, the Broncos are taking a big risk right now by signing linebacker Niko Koutouvides from Seattle. He's a good special teams player, but to put him on the field on a regular basis seems like a bigger gamble than I'd be willing to take. I'm not looking for them to do that much in the AFC West again this year. |
| 18 |
|
Cincinnati 7-9 |
The Bengals haven't done too much during the off-season. The only major deal they've done was re-signing Dhani Jones and picking up Antwan Odom to shore up the defense. There needs to be a concerted effort in fixing the offense around Carson Palmer. And as much as Marvin Lewis wants to hold onto him, Cincy might have to get rid of Chad Johnson to start that process. |

|
Tampa Bay 9-7 |
I'm convinced that every QB will end up playing for Jon Gruden sometime in their careers. Some signal callers, like Brian Griese, get to make a stop in Tampa Bay twice. The Bucs did improve at the center position by picking up Jeff Faine from the Saints to replace unrestricted free agent John Wade. Not a lot really needed for the Buccaneers to do right now, but d-end will get filled one way or another this off-season. |

|
San Diego 11-5 |
It's hard to argue with A.J. Smith when it comes to his roster moves, but one has to wonder what's going on his mind right now. Smith allowed tackle Shane Olivea, fullback Lorenzo Neal, cornerback Drayton Florence and running back Michael Turner all go this off-season. Turner was understandable, but the other three make me wonder what plans he has to replace them. |
| 21 |
|
Green Bay 13-3 |
Things were looking normal in Green Bay until Brett Favre decided to hang up his cleats after 17 years. Now the Packers are looking for a solid No. 3 gun slinger to go behind Aaron Rodgers and Dalton Bell. The popular belief is that Craig Nall will be re-signed for that honor. Meanwhile, a new wide receiver to compliment Donald Driver would be much appreciated. Regardless, they're still going to be the favorite to win the NFC North. |
| 22 |
|
Seattle 10-6 |
The Seahawks picked up a nice insurance plan for Shaun Alexander in T.J. Duckett. However, losing Josh Brown will hurt their kicking game as they're aren't a lot of guys out there that can hit a 50-yard field goal in lousy Seattle weather. |
| 23 |
|
Washington 9-7 |
The 'Skins haven't done a lot this off-season while trying to find a head coach. However, Jim Zorn did get Todd Collins to stay on board as the No. 2 QB. That's about all Washington as done at this point. We'll update this when something actually happens. |
| 24 |
|
Arizona 8-8 |
Not many moves are being made by the Cards right now. They lost Calvin Pace, but that doesn't seem to have bothered Arizona all that much. It almost seems like they're trying to find a way to sign Larry Fitzgerald to a long term deal or find a way to trade him. |
| 25 |
|
New England 16-0 |
I know the Patriots are one of the best teams at just simply reloading from within once their best talent leaves for the big payday. You have to admit that losing Asante Samuel, Randall Gay and Donte Stallworth all in the first week of free agency. Sure they re-signed Randy Moss and Jabar Gaffney, but the defense will need some serious retooling. |
| 26 |
|
Pittsburgh 10-6 |
Pittsburgh is another club that hasn't done much this off-season. They tried to reel in Alan Faneca, only to see him go to the Jets. And maybe it's just me, but Ben Roethlisberger was grossly overpaid in that eight-year deal. |
| 27 |
|
Houston 8-8 |
The Texans look to be ready to make some moves on the offensive line after getting rid of Mike Flanagan and Drew Hodgdon. Meanwhile, Houston is building up a strong defense by adding Kevin Bentley and Jacques Reeves. It's just too bad they're in the AFC South, otherwise they might be a playoff team. |
| 28 |
|
Chicago 7-9 |
The Bears decided to give Rex Grossman another go at quarterback. The problem is he'll have nobody to throw the ball to with Muhsin Muhammad in Carolina and Bernard Berrian in Minnesota. If they can't get anything other than Devin Hester to catch passes, then Chicago will be in for a long season of fades by bettors. |
| 29 |
|
N.Y. Giants 10-6 |
The Giants are paying the price for winning the Super Bowl right now, especially on defense. Kawika Mitchell is in Buffalo now and Reggie Torbor is slumming in Miami. If Michael Strahan decides to call it quits, then the G-men will have a tough time filling those spots in the draft. |
| 30 |
|
Oakland 4-12 |
Someone please tell me why, for the love of God, did Oakland sign Tommy Kelly for $50.5 million? And signing Javon Walker from the Broncos for $55 million is another head scratcher. It's time to take the 'under' on the Raiders' total wins. |
| 31 |
|
Kansas City 4-12 |
There's not a lot of say about the Chiefs except they're going to get younger. They've dumped a lot of 30-something players off the roster. Now Kansas City has 11 draft picks to replenish the ranks, but don't expect miracles at the draft or next season. |
| 32 |
|
Baltimore 5-11 |
Baltimore has decided to keep just one player from leaving right now by placing the franchise tag on d-end Terrell Suggs. They dropped Mike Anderson and Mike Flynn, which was expected. What's even more surprising is that there is no real rumors swirling about what they might do. Given that info puts them in last place in my book. |
