Brady out with ACL tear
September 7, 2008
By VI News VegasInsider.com
New England quarterback Tom Brady is expected to miss the entire season due to a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee according to team sources. The reigning NFL MVP was injured in the first quarter against Kansas City when Chiefs safety Bernard Pollard lunged and hit the quarterback's leg as he released a pass to wide receiver Randy Moss. Brady, who has started 128 consecutive games, is scheduled to have an MRI Monday.
"He was in a lot of pain," stated Pollard after the game. "When you hear a scream, you know that."
An anonymous Patriots player went as far to state, "Matt Cassel's our quarterback the rest of the year."
Cassel, Brady's backup the last three years, stepped in and led New England to a 17-10 victory over Kansas City, although the Chiefs easily covered as a 16-point road underdog. The fourth-year veteran hasn't been a starting quarterback since high school after backing up Heisman Trophy winners Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart at Southern Cal. Cassel was 13-of-18 passing for 152 yards and a touchdown against Kansas City.
The Patriots are bringing in former Tampa Bay quarterback Chris Simms in Monday for a workout, and there are various internet reports stating that the team will also look at journeyman Tim Rattay.
Expect future odds on New England to be taken down and subsequently changed Monday morning. Las Vegas Sports Consultants opened the New York Jets as a three-point home 'chalk' over the Patriots next weekend, but the game is 'off the board' everywhere offshore as of Sunday night. The only casino in Nevada that is still taking action on this Week 2 contest is the Las Vegas Hilton, listing New York as a 2 1/2-point favorite.
Heading into the opening weekend of the season, New England was listed as the 3/2 favorite to win the AFC Championship, and the 5/2 'chalk' to win Super Bowl XLIII.
Various internet reports were used in this story.
