Recap: Blue Jackets , Red Wings
Date: January 15, 2011 7:00 PM EDT

DETROIT (AP) - A rash of injuries hasn't been enough to slow the Detroit Red Wings.

Johan Franzen scored 45 seconds into overtime and the Red Wings rallied from a 2-0 first-period deficit to beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 6-5 on Saturday night.

Tomas Holmstrom (broken right hand) and goalie Jimmy Howard (bruised right knee) were injured In Friday night's 3-2 shootout loss to the Blue Jackets in Columbus. Holmstrom, who won't need surgery, is expected to miss three to four weeks, and Howard a few days.

Holmstrom and Howard join Mike Modano (severed tendon in his wrist), Pavel Datsyuk (broken bone in his right hand), Danny Cleary (fractured left ankle), Brad Stuart (broken jaw) and Chris Osgood (sports hernia surgery) on the injured list.

``We've got to find different ways, different players to step up each night,' said Darren Helm, who had two assists. ``And that's what we've been doing so far.'

Franzen beat Mason with a shot from the high inside edge of the right circle for his 19th goal.

Drew Miller had a goal and two assists, and Jonathan Ericsson and Kris Draper each added a goal and an assist for Detroit. Valtteri Filppula and Brian Rafalski also scored.

Red Wings coach Mike Babcock put Miller on a line with Draper and Helm early in the game, swapping Miller and Patrick Eaves.

``I knew going into the game I was going to do that. Millsie really skates good,' Babcock said. ``... Millsie's been real good with Helm and Draper or Helm and Eaves for two years now.'

Joey MacDonald made 24 saves.

The journeyman came in late in the first period on Friday night after Howard was injured.

``Last night I felt real good. Tonight felt good at times but back-to-back and stuff, you know what? You keep battling. That's all you've got to do,' MacDonald said. ``They score, you just don't worry about it and try to make that next big save.'

It was MacDonald's first NHL win since Dec, 3, 2009, when he beat Columbus 6-3 as a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs. It was his first win for Detroit since Feb. 11, 2007.

Rick Nash had a goal and two assists, and Derick Brassard and Grant Clitsome a goal and an assist each for Columbus, which has lost six of seven. Matt Calvert and R.J. Umberger also scored and Steve Mason stopped 28 shots.

Two Detroit goals went in off of Mason and two deflected in off of Blue Jackets defenseman Marth Methot. One of the goals went in off of both of them.

``It was just an extremely wild game,' Columbus coach Scott ``Arniel said. ``Almost looked like the last shot was going to win it and that's what happened.'

Nash sent the contest into overtime with 1:04 left and Mason pulled for the extra attacker. Nash's screened wrist shot from the high slot beat MacDonald for his 21st goal. Nash also thought he had won the game with a little more than 10 seconds left in regulation time when he tried to jam the puck in between the post and MacDonald's right pad. But video replay didn't show the puck in the net.

``You couldn't see the puck. Ricky thought it was in,' Arneil said.

Draper put Detroit ahead 5-4 3:32 into the third when he swatted in a rebound with one hand for his fourth goal.

Umberger's power-play goal tied it at 4 1:10 into the second period. He put in a rebound for his 15th.

``Our effort has been a lot better the last couple of games,' Umberger said. ``We gave up some leads, but we showed a lot of heart in battling back.

Rafalski scored 8:02 into the second period to give the Red Wings a 4-3 lead with his fourth goal, which went in off of Methot. Ericsson tied the score at 3, 3:57 into the middle period with his third as he banked a shot off Mason's back.

Calvert's second goal gave Columbus a 3-2 lead 2:57 into the second.

Detroit tied the game at 2 with two goals in the final three minutes of the first period.

Filppula put the Red Wings on the board with 2:26 left in the opening period with his 11th goal. Miller's third goal tied it with 39 seconds left in the period. Miller tried to pass the puck in front from below the goal line but it deflected off Methot's stick, off of Mason and into the net. It was Miller's second goal in two games.

Brassard's 10th goal opened the scoring just 33 seconds into the game. Clitsome made it 2-0 4:12 into the first period.

Notes: Detroit recalled F Tomas Tatar and G Thomas McCollum from their AHL affiliate in Grand Rapids earlier on Saturday. ... Columbus D Rostislav Klesla didn't play because he was sick. ... Draper's assist on Miller's goal was the 200th of his career.
