MONTREAL (AP) -The New Jersey Devils faced the Montreal Canadiens with someone other than Martin Brodeur in goal for the first time in nearly 12 years, and Scott Clemmensen delivered a top-quality outing of his own.

Zach Parise scored a power-play goal 31 seconds into overtime to lift New Jersey to a 2-1 win over the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday night.

Parise put a shot into the open right side for his team-leading 15th goal with Montreal's Alex Kovalev in the penalty box after the Canadiens star was called for tripping in the offensive zone late in the third period.

``It was a good win, Clemmer played really well,' Parise said. ``He made some unbelievable saves and kept us in it and gave us a good chance to win tonight.'

Clemmensen, who made 25 saves, became the first Devils goalie other than Brodeur - who had left elbow surgery in early November - to start against the Canadiens since Mike Dunham in a 4-4 tie in Montreal on Feb. 1, 1997.

``I'm not trying to replace Marty, especially not here in his hometown,' Clemmensen said. ``It's tough to come in here and play because they're a good team and they play well at home and they feed off the energy of the crowd, and that's why it's a tough game to play. I'm not trying to go out there and do what Marty does. I'm just trying to go out there and play my game and give our team a chance.'

Clemmensen came up with a fine save on Andrei Kostitsyn's shot from the right side with just over 2 minutes remaining in the third.

``He did a great job of coming across on those plays and making some big saves,' said Devils captain Jamie Langenbrunner, who tied it at 1 when his shot squeezed through Carey Price's pads 4:05 into the second.

The Devils, who won 3-2 in overtime Thursday in Philadelphia, ended a five-game road trip with a 4-1 record. New Jersey has won seven of eight.

``I just think everybody's in synch,' coach Brent Sutter said. ``The biggest thing that I want to see as a group is no matter what the score is, the amount of time the game is, we've got to play a certain way, we've got to stay with that.'

Montreal fell to 3-1 on its team-record seven-game homestand.

Kovalev was sent off for tripping Johnny Oduya in the Devils' zone with 27.3 seconds remaining in regulation. The Canadiens failed to convert on the power play despite five opportunities, including one with 5:38 remaining when Jay Leach was called for hooking.

``Every penalty is tough,' Canadiens coach Guy Carbonneau said. ``The only good one is when you save a goal, in my book. All the other ones - you know, especially at this time of the game, when they just called one on them, you know that they're going to try and even out.'

Montreal lost two defensemen in the third, including Andrei Markov, who was struck in the mouth by a puck that deflected off Parise's stick at 12:08.

Markov left the ice hunched over and bleeding from the mouth and went directly to the dressing room, joining Mathieu Dandenault, who left the game moments earlier after he was struck on the right foot while blocking a shot.

Dandenault returned to the bench before overtime. Markov did not return.

``(Markov) is O.K.,' Carbonneau said. ``He's got a big cut on the lip and I think he lost two teeth.'

Canadiens rookie Matt D'Agostini scored for the third game in a row to give Montreal the lead 15:35 in.

Clemmensen was unable to hold Markov's shot from the left point in his glove, and D'Agostini swatted the rebound into the net after the puck dropped at the New Jersey goalie's feet.

``There was a little bit of traffic in front but by the time (Markov) released the puck, I saw it the whole way and I should have had it, no question,' Clemmensen said. ``It's one I'd like to have back, and I think if you talked to Carey, he'd probably like to have his goal back.'

Saku Koivu recorded his 613th point with an assist on D'Agostini's goal to move ahead of Mats Naslund as the highest-scoring non-Canadian in team history, and into 11th place overall among the storied franchise's career leaders.

Langenbrunner drove a slap shot between Carey Price's legs that squeezed through the Montreal goalie's pads and dribbled behind him and rolled over the goal line 4:05 into the middle period.

``They were doing a good job of taking away the 2-on-1 and I was just trying to shoot it hard and hopefully it finds its way through or gets a rebound, with Zach going to the net hard,' Langenbrunner said.

Price came up with a huge save later in the period, stopping Patrik Elias' shot from the slot at 15:24.

Notes: Montreal's logo for next month's All-Star Game at the Bell Centre was painted onto the center-ice faceoff circle. The Canadiens, who celebrated the 99th anniversary of the team's founding Thursday, previously had logos for their 100th season. ... Brodeur won 28 of his 42 consecutive starts against Montreal. ... The Devils have a season-high six-game road trip from Jan. 10-19. ... Koivu has 182 goals and 431 assists in 753 regular-season games since 1995-96. Mats Naslund, who won a Stanley Cup with the Canadiens in 1985-86, had 243 goals and 369 assists in 617 games with Montreal from 1982-90.
