Recap: Flames 1, Avalanche 2

DENVER (AP) - Miikka Kiprusoff's long run of dominance against the Colorado Avalanche ended with a soft bounce of the puck and the timely swing of David Jones' stick.

Jones knocked in a rebound 3:51 into overtime to lift the Avalanche past the Flames 2-1 on Tuesday night, handing Kiprusoff his first loss in his last 11 starts against Colorado.

``It was about time. We needed to get a goal like that to beat them,' Jones said after Colorado's first win in five games this season against the Flames. Overall, Colorado had lost nine straight to the Flames.

Kiprusoff had turned away a shot from Paul Stastny for his 31st save, but the rebound trickled away. Jones skated in and drove the puck into the net for his second OT goal of the season and fifth of his career.

``It was the law of averages,' Stastny said. ``He had been tough on us, but it was our time to get him. I got a good pass (from Matt Hunwick). I took it to the net, and Jones found a way to sneak it in. It was kind an ugly goal.'

The win boosted Colorado's point total to 85, moving the Avalanche into seventh place in the Western Conference. Colorado, which has won four in a row at home, has seven games remaining in the last two weeks of the regular season.

Calgary, trying to stay in contention, has been limited to one goal in each of its last three games.

``You aren't going to win many scoring one goal in games,' Flames captain Jarome Iginla said. ``The shots haven't gone in the last couple of games. I had some breakaways and some other chances. We couldn't get the second goal. We just aren't scoring.'

Colorado had a chance to get the lead with about 3 1/2 minutes left in regulation but Ryan O'Reilly's shot from in close hit the crossbar and bounced away. O'Reilly's nose was bloodied on the play when defenseman Mark Giordano's stick caught him across the face. O'Reilly was tended to at the bench and continued playing.

Matt Stajan gave Calgary a 1-0 lead in the first period. Stastny tied it later in the period.

Giordano fired a shot at the end of regulation, but Semyon Varlamov came up with a nifty save to send the game into overtime.

Iginla shook loose on breakaways late in the first period and midway through the second, but was frustrated both times by Varlamov, who made 31 saves and extended his winning streak to five. Varlamov dropped to his knees to stuff Iginla's first shot, and turned the second away with his stick to keep the game tied.

After a turnover in the Avalanche zone less than two minutes into the game, Stajan picked up a loose puck and beat Varlamov with a wrist shot between the pads.

Colorado tied it at 9:05 when Stastny redirected Shane O'Brien's shot from the point past Kiprusoff. It was Stastny's second goal in two games.

NOTES: Stajan has at least one point in seven of eight games. ... Calgary defenseman Jay Bouwmeester has the longest active ironman streak in the NHL at 580 consecutive games. ... Colorado killed all three of Calgary's power plays. ... The Avalanche didn't have a power play in a game for the sixth time this season. ... Jones' five career overtime goals have all come since Jan. 1, 2011, the most by any NHL player in that span.
