NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -Marty Brodeur grew up in Montreal, rooting for Patrick Roy and the Canadiens.

There is now a good chance Brodeur will be returning home this weekend with a shot at tying Roy's NHL record for career wins by a goaltender.

Brodeur moved within two wins of tying Roy's record of 551 on Tuesday night, making 35 saves in the New Jersey Devils' 3-2 victory over the Calgary Flames.

``I think for people around me, they feel it's a great story,' Brodeur said of having a chance to tie the mark in Montreal. ``It's still alive. I have a chance. One more game to go.'

Brodeur would have to start and beat Phoenix on Thursday night to get a shot at the mark on Saturday.

``Marty obviously played very, very well,' Devils coach Brent Sutter said after the Devils bounced back from a 7-3 loss to the New York Islanders on Saturday, a game in which Brodeur was lifted. ``We responded the way I like to see us respond.'

Brodeur pushed himself after the loss to the lowly Islanders, and then downplayed his work in recording his 549th win.

``I was in certain situations where the puck hit me today and Saturday it didn't,' said Brodeur, who has now won four of five starts since returning from a four-month hiatus following elbow surgery.

Jamie Langenbrunner, Brian Rolston and Zach Parise scored and the Devils killed off six of seven power plays in tying a franchise record with their eighth straight home victory.

The win also was the Devils' 10th in 13 games, and it helped them avoid their first losing streak in more than two months.

Calgary newcomer Olli Jokinen's third goal in four games could not prevent the Flames from losing their third straight. Curtis Glencross also scored with less than a second to play.

Brodeur drew chants of ``Marty, Marty, Marty' from the crowd when he slid across the net to stop Jamie Lundmark alone in front shortly after Parise's goal.

At Montreal, Saku Koivu scored twice, including a power-play goal 1:40 into overtime and the Canadiens celebrated Bob Gainey's return to coaching with a win.

Koivu also tied it with 4:35 left in regulation on a goal that required a lengthy video review.

At Philadelphia, Jeff Carter scored two goals in the third period, and Scott Hartnell scored a pair for the Flyers.

Martin Biron made 27 saves and Mike Richards added a power-play goal for the Flyers, who strengthened their hold on fourth place in the Eastern Conference with their eighth win in 12 games.

Maxim Afinogenov and Jochen Hecht scored for Buffalo.

At Pittsburgh, Evgeni Malkin scored a goal and then decided the shootout for the Penguins, who rallied from two goals down in the third period for their seventh consecutive victory.

Sidney Crosby scored the tying goal and assisted on NHL scoring leader Malkin's 30th during Pittsburgh's ninth win in 11 home games.

At Columbus, Ohio, Steve Mason earned his NHL-best ninth shutout of the season, stopping 35 shots and making Raffi Torres' third-period goal stand against Boston.

Torres broke the scoreless deadlock 6:35 into the period, and Rick Nash scored a seeing-eye, empty-net goal in the final minute to clinch the win for the Blue Jackets.

At St. Paul, Minn., Christian Ehrhoff's overtime goal sailed over Minnesota goalie Niklas Backstrom's stick and the Sharks ended a four-game losing streak.

Owen Nolan scored two goals in the last six-plus minutes of regulation against his old team to tie the game for Minnesota.

At Detroit, Johan Franzen scored 3:35 into overtime and Valtteri Filppula had a goal and an assist to lead the Red Wings.

Brian Rafalski also scored and Ty Conklin made 23 saves for Detroit.

Martin Hanzal and Shane Doan scored for Phoenix, which has lost six of seven.

At Nashville, Tenn., Sergei Fedorov scored 2:20 into overtime and the Capitals snapped a season-worst, four-game losing streak while the Predators dropped their second straight after winning six in a row.

At Toronto, Mikhail Grabovski's first goal in 18 games came in overtime to lift the Maple Leafs.

The Islanders blew a chance to clear the puck from their zone and Grabovski fired it in from the middle of the zone 50 seconds into the extra period.

Lee Stempniak and Alexei Ponikarovsky also scored for the Leafs.

Kyle Okposo and Blake Comeau scored for New York.

At St. Louis, David Perron had two goals, and the Blues scored on three of their first eight shots.

St. Louis jumped to 11th place in the Western Conference with 68 points. Dallas stayed in 10th, tied with Minnesota with 70 points.

At Denver, Kari Lehtonen had 35 saves in earning his third shutout of the season for Atlanta.

Lehtonen's 14th NHL shutout helped the Thrashers improve to 8-4-1 in their past 13 games. The surge includes a two-game season sweep of the Avalanche, who lost for the seventh time in eight games.

Todd White and Zach Bogosian staked Atlanta to a 2-0 lead and Rich Peverley added an empty-netter.
