Recap: Islanders , Flyers
Date: February 14, 2009 1:00 PM EDT

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -Martin Biron had plenty of incentive against the New York Islanders.

Biron stopped 38 shots and won his first game in more than a month as the Philadelphia Flyers defeated the Islanders 5-1 on Saturday afternoon.

``I wasn't happy with the way I was playing the last two, three weeks, maybe a month or longer,' Biron said after extending his winning streak against New York to 10 games - the longest streak by a goaltender against the Islanders.

It was Biron's first win since he beat Toronto 4-1 on Jan. 10. Since then he was 0-4, allowing 17 goals in 13 periods before Saturday.

``I thought Marty was solid today,' Flyers coach John Stevens said. ``He looked square to the puck and his balance looked good. It looked like his confidence is coming back.'

Biron was lifted in his last start after allowing three goals in the first period at Boston on Feb. 7 in a game won by the Flyers 4-3.

That's why I tried to get fired up to feed off the guys and get something going,' Biron said. ``I bought a lot of emotion, a lot of energy to practice this week.'

Arron Asham, Claude Giroux, Scott Hartnell, Matthew Carle and Simon Gagne had the goals for the Flyers, who did all their scoring in bunches.

Andy Hilbert scored for the Islanders, who dropped their fifth straight game.

Yann Danis had 29 saves for the Islanders.

The Flyers scored twice within 44 seconds early in the first period and added two goals within 13 seconds midway through the third.

``I just don't think we were ready to play,' Islanders coach Scott Gordon said. ``We weren't very sharp at the beginning of the game and it took us a few shifts to get our legs under us.'

Giroux put the Flyers ahead with a one-timer at 5:00 of the first period after taking a pass from Scottie Upshall.

Hartnell made it 2-0 when he deflected Jeff Carter's wrist shot from the right circle at 5:44.

``I thought we came out strong in the first period and we didn't give up much defensively,' Hartnell said. ``For most of the game we played the way we needed to.'

Hilbert got the Islanders within 2-1 with a wrist shot from the top of the left circle at 6:15 of the third period.

Carle scored unassisted at 9:10, Asham had an unassisted goal at 9:23, and Gagne scored on a penalty shot at 10:17.

``There were a couple of swings of momentum but it was definitely closer than a 5-1 hockey game,' the Islanders' Chris Campoli said.

The Flyers recalled Scott Munroe from the Philadelphia Phantoms, their American Hockey League affiliate, to serve as Biron's backup in place of Antero Niittymaki who is out with the flu.

Notes: New York was without C Doug Weight (MCL sprain), D Mark Streit (upper-body sprain), and RW Trent Hunter (hip flexor), among others. ... Islanders C Mike Comrie played in his 500th NHL game. ... Philadelphia C Carter, who had an assist on Hartnell's goal, has six points (two goals, four assists) in his past four games. ... The Flyers have beaten the Islanders seven straight times at home. New York has not won in Philadelphia since April 7, 2007.
