Recap: Kings , Blues
Date: October 24, 2008 8:30 PM EDT

ST. LOUIS (AP) -The St. Louis Blues lost a game and may also have lost a goalie for an extended period of time.

Dustin Brown's goal and assist and Jason LaBarbera stopped 15 shots for his third career shutout in the Los Angeles Kings' 4-0 victory over the Blues on Friday night.

Before the game, Blues goalie Manny Legace tripped on a carpet laid out for Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin to drop the ceremonial first puck.

``I went to go step on the ice and the (Scottrade Center security) guy goes, 'Watch the carpet,' and he had his foot there holding it, so I figured it would be safe to step on,' Legace said. ``If he's holding it and I figured the other end's pretty much secure, I was just worrying about the carpet slipping (forward). As soon as I went to step down, he took his foot off the carpet. As soon as I stepped on the carpet, the carpet just shot out and my leg kept going and my other one was still on the bench. I felt it pull right away.'

Legace played the first period but the left hip flexor injury obviously affected his play. He gave up two goals on 12 shots and was replaced by St. Louis native Ben Bishop at the start of the second period

Kyle Quincey, Patrick O'Sullivan and Jarret Stoll also scored goals for the Kings, winners of three of their last four after opening the season 0-2. LaBarbera earned his third career shutout.

``It feels good to get a win,' Kings coach Terry Murray said. ``When you're on the road, it's always very difficult to find wins.'

St. Louis has dropped two straight at home and are 1-2 during a seven-game homestand.

``I thought the Kings played real well,' Blues coach Andy Murray said. ``I thought they had good structure. They were very good tonight, which we expected them to be. They play real hard. ... We knew we were playing a good team tonight.'

Quincey's first goal of the season came off a screen shot from the left point after a faceoff 12:21 into the first period. O'Sullivan's third of the season came off Barret Jackman's turnover with 2:11 to play in the period, as he beat Legace with a quick snap shot from the slot.

Stoll and Brown scored in the third period on two more turnovers by the Blues. The first by Keith Tkachuk and the second by Lee Stempniak resulted in unassisted goals.

``We didn't handle the puck very well in the neutral-zone area, and we give credit to them,' Andy Murray said. ``I thought they did a good job of closing it down. They played a real smart game. We made poor decisions, didn't play with enough authority on our game.'

LaBarbera, who was pulled in his last start against Colorado, only had to make seven saves after the first period.

``It didn't seem like we gave them any room,' LaBarbera said. ``We just looked really good tonight.'

Notes: The 6-foot-7 Bishop became the tallest goalie to suit up in an NHL game. ... Tkachuk snapped a franchise-record streak of scoring goals in consecutive to begin a season at six. It's the third time in his career Tkachuk scored in six straight games. ... Blues F Paul Kariya had a career-best nine-game assists streak snapped. Kariya had 12 assists over that span. ... Friday was supposed to feature two of the top four draft picks from this past summer's NHL draft. The Kings selected D Drew Doughty with the second pick, while the Blues picked D Alex Pietrangelo. However, Pietrangelo sat out his fourth straight game with an upper body injury. ... The Kings play in Nashville on Saturday before beginning a season-high seven-game homestand Monday against Detroit.
