Recap: Red Wings , Coyotes
Date: December 13, 2008 9:00 PM EDT

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) -After watching the last three games from the bench, Chris Osgood made himself right at home back in the crease.

Osgood made 24 saves and turned aside three shootout attempts in the Detroit Red Wings' 5-4 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes on Saturday night.

``The type of competitor he is, he hasn't been happy to see the other goalie out there the last three nights,' Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. ``We're always trying to get his competitive juices flowing. He's a competitor. He's a pro and he's one of the best of all time.'

Osgood has 375 career regular-season victories.

``The way it's going I'm just trying to push onward and play better and better,' Osgood said. ``I'm close to where I want to be but I'm not over that hump yet.'

Osgood closed out the shootout with a pad save on Shane Doan's attempt to secure the victory - Detroit's fifth in six games.

``Give him credit,' Doan said. ``He did his job and our shooters didn't do ours.'

Johan Franzen scored his second goal of the game with 19.9 seconds left to force overtime, and Henrik Zetterberg and Jiri Hudler scored in a shootout for the Red Wings.

``When we get down one or two goals we put everything out there,' Franzen said. ``We play better that way than when we have a lead. It gives us confidence we can come from behind. If you do it once, you can do it again.'

Franzen sent the game to overtime when he beat Ilya Bryzgalov from the low slot with the Red Wings on the power play and with a sixth attacker on the ice.

Bryzgalov, who finished with 34 saves in regulation, flung his stick into the left corner after Osgood's game-ending save in the shootout.

Phoenix defenseman Zbynek Michalek had been whistled for delay of game when his clearing attempt went over the glass with 1:23 to go.

``It's clearly the right call but it just happened,' Coyotes coach Wayne Gretzky said. ``With the way the ice is at that point in the game, the puck's rolling and it just happened.'

Steven Reinprecht gave Phoenix a 4-3 lead with 4:40 left with help from a friendly post. Osgood made the initial save on Peter Mueller's shot, but the puck bounced off the right post, behind the goalie and into the middle of the crease.

Reinprecht skated in from the low slot and tapped the puck into the open net for his second goal in three games.

``It went in and out of my glove and hit that post,' Osgood said. ``It's frustrating but frustrating describes what's happened to me all season.'

Joakim Lindstrom scored for the second time in two games and added an assist, Doan and Mikkel Boedker also scored, and Ed Jovanovski had two assists for the Coyotes.

``When you're at a point where you tie it up late you're happy, and when you're tied up upon you're unhappy,' Gretzky said.

Zetterberg and Tomas Holstrom also scored in regulation for the Red Wings.

The game marked the return of Detroit defenseman Chris Chelios for his 25th season. Chelios, who turns 47 in January, missed the Red Wings' first 28 games after fracturing his right tibia during the preseason.

``The first and third periods couldn't have been any better,' Chelios said. ``The second period, I made one bad decision.'

The Red Wings needed only 33 seconds to score against Bryzgalov. Zetterberg took a pass from Niklas Lidstrom at the bottom of the right faceoff circle and scored on a wrist shot over Bryzygalov's glove.

Lindstrom tied it with 27 seconds left in the period when he one-timed a pass from Martin Hanzal past a partially screened Osgood from the right faceoff circle.

Doan gave Phoenix a 2-1 lead at 1:47 of the second. He took a long outlet pass from Jovanovski, skated behind the Detroit defense and deked Osgood to the ice before scoring on a backhander.

Franzen tied it at 2 on a short-handed breakaway at 6:37 of the second. He stole the puck from Boedker at the Detroit blue line and scored with a hard wrist shot.

``It's never fun to make that kind of mistake,' Boedker said. ``I tried to make a risky move on the blue line that didn't work so next time I'll make the safe play. It was a good lesson to me to not be that cocky with the puck.'

Zetterberg made it 3-2 at 10:17 of the second when he redirected Brian Rafalski's shot from the point past Bryzgalov.

Boedker tied it at 3 with 9:30 to go, beating Osgood on a quick wrist short from the right faceoff circle for his first goal in 17 games.

Notes: Bryzgalov has allowed a goal on the first shot he has faced twice in his last seven games. ... Osgood moved past former Rangers and Panthers goalie John Vanbiesbrouck into 12th place on the career wins list. ... Jovanovski's assist on Doan's goal was the 300th of his career.
