Phil Steele: News and Notes (Week 6)

In the Akron/Buffalo game there were 19 FD’s and 19 punts. UB went 58 yds in 7 plays for a TD on their opening poss and their 7-0 lead held up through 3Q’s but then Akron got a TD and 2 FG’s in the 4Q for the win. Zips QB Getsy had 14 yds passing in the 1H and 131 in the 2H...

A star player on Saturday was UNLV K Sergio Aguayo. With SDSt leading 10-7 Aguayo nailed a 52 yd FG with 5:05 left to tie it he then hit a 52 yd FG with :09 left to pull out the win and turn up the heat up on Tom Craft at SDSt...

Ole Miss’ D allowed just 4 FD’s and 81 yds offense which sounds impressive except for the fact The Citadel was starting a backup QB due to injury and the Power Plays forecast for the game had only called for The Citadel to gain 51 yds. Interestingly, both team’s had a defensive TD in the low scoring 27-7 win...

It was a big game for Kevin Robinson at Utah St. He tied a Utah St record with his 3rd career PR for a TD, this one 87 yds and also had 39 and 27 yd TD rec’s as USt built a 24-7 lead in their 24-17 win over San Jose St..

Tulsa dominated SMiss even more than the final would indicate finishing with 26-11 FD and 475-169 yd edges. Basically they trailed 17-3 because of 2 int returns, one of which went 49 yds for a TD and another which was ret’d 19 yds to the 5 setting up a TD. Tulsa simply dominated the rest of the game and still won by 17 despite the returns...

New Mexico had a shot at beating BYU twice in a row for the first time in 34 years and led 24-13 in the 4Q but BYU’s offense stumbled vs SDSt the previous week, would pile up 464 yds offense. The Cougars got 2 TD’s, one with 7:15 left and the other with 1:40 left to pull out the win...

The 69 points Louisville put up were the most ever allowed by a N Carolina team with the previous high being 66 in a loss to UVA in 1912. The NCAA’s sack leader, Elvis Dumervil had 3 more sacks, 2 FF and an int. Surprisingly L’ville only had a 23-22 FD edge...

Michigan lost the battle for the Little Brown Jug for the first time since 1986. They trailed 20-13 but tied 20-20. Garrett Rivas missed 42 and 34 yd FG’s in the 4Q. The key play of the game happened when Minnesota appeared to be trying to run out the clock. They had backup QB Tony Mortensen in as starter Cupito was shaken up and were just trying to hand off the ball and force OT but Russell ripped off a 59 yd run to the Mich 15 which set up the game winning FG allowing the Gophers to pull out the upset...

Colorado was even more dominant than the final score and stats would show in their game vs Texas A&M. CU led 41-6 in the 4Q before allowing A&M 172 yds offense behind backup QB McGee vs their backups. CU finished with 559 yds and the Aggies had just 184 prior to those 2 drives...

Penn St knocked off their highest ranked foe since their 1999 win over #4 Arizona in front of 110,753. The Lions moved to 6-0 and are the only undefeated team left in the Big 10...

Air Force led Navy 24-14 into the 4Q and Navy faced a 4th down at their own 29 with 3:00 left trailing by 7. They converted for the FD and got a TD later on the drive and after a 9 yd punt got the game winning 46 yd FG with :01 left handing AF another tough loss. AF had just 1 FD in the 4Q and it was the first time Navy had won 3 straight over AF since 1977-’79...

Tyrell Sutton, who was Mr Ohio football in HS last year but due to his size was not recruited heavily by the Buckeyes, had another huge game for Northwestern as he rushed for 244 yds and had 4 TD’s in the upset win over Wisconsin...

Army’s homefield edge was lessened by a steady downpour as few fans were in the stands for Homecoming except for a contingent of Cadets. Army led 10-7 in the 4Q but Kent Smith led C Mich on a 76 yd, 14 play TD drive with 6:54 left to pull out the win. It was the Chippewas 3rd big road win having already knocked off Miami OH and Akron...

While the scoreboard shows USC with a lackluster 21 point win vs Arizona, they did have a 724-245 yd edge...Baylor won their very first Big 12 road game which is amazing since they’re in the 10th year in the league. The Bears had come in 0-37 on the Big 12 road prior. Iowa St did have a 320-276 yd edge. The key play of the game happened with 6:37 left as Iowa St, down 16-13, fumbled at the BU 19. BU would not only run out the clock but went 81 yds in 12 plays for a TD with 1:36 left to ice it...

Texas was dominant in ending their 5 year losing streak to Oklahoma. At the half they had a 287-67 yd edge and Oklahoma did not have a play go longer than 9 yds until 12:04 was left in the game and they trailed 38-6! Two big plays gave Texas the comfortable 24-6 lead at the half. RB Charles spun around in the middle of the line and amazingly was able to simply turn around and race the rest of the 80 yds for a TD and then with :17 left in the half, inexplicably, OU left WR Pittman wide open and he got a 64 yd TD rec and the Sooners offense couldn’t overcome that type of deficit...

Colorado St got a TD with 5:05 left vs Utah and Utah responded with a 1st & goal at the 4. On 3rd & goal from the 1 it looked like the RB got into the EZ for the TD but he was ruled short and the 4th down run was stopped inside the 1 and CSU held on for the 4 point win...

Arkansas’ Darren McFadden and Felix Jones became the first freshmen in Arkansas history to each top 100 yds rushing in a single game...Ball St/W Mich went an amazing 5 OT’s before BSU got a 30 yd FG for a 60‑57 win. The two combined for 1,090 yds total offense...

LSU had 479 yds offense vs Vanderbilt and the Commodores did not even top 100 yds until they got a 40 yd run on the final play of the game to put them to 138. Jay Cutler hit just 11 of 32 for 113 yds...

What a tough loss for UAB. They punted into the EZ for a TB with :22 left in the game leading 27-22. SMU QB Romo hit 28 & 19 yd passes to get them to the UAB 31 with :03 left and then his Hail Mary prayer was answered with a TD and SMU took a knee on the xp with no time left on the clock for the miracle win.

INJURIES AND SUSPENSIONS OF NOTE

Connecticut QB Matt Bonislawski broke his collarbone on the 3rd drive. Bonislawski had hit just 2 of 7 for 14 yds and DJ Hernandez replaced and hit 4 of 8 for 31 yds while rushing for 86 guiding the 26-7 win over Syracuse. UC’s offense benefitted from 20 (after 25 yd PR), 31 (after int) and 22 (after fmbl) yd scoring drives...

ULL was without QB Babb and backup Michael Desormeaux was impressive early rushing for 83 yds and led ULL to a 10-7 lead with the team gaining 105 yds in the 1Q. They would have just 69 yds in the 2nd & 3rd Q’s combined and Florida Atl took control with three 4Q TD’s for a 28-10 win with a 430-217 yd edge...

Rutgers was without 3 defensive starters vs W Virginia in LB Bynes, DB Nugent and DE Foster and also had a 4‑0 turnover deficit in the driving rain. WV’s first 2 TD’s were a blk’d punt returned for a TD and a 28 yd drive after a fumble...

SDSt RB Lynell Hamilton inj’d his hamstring in the 2Q vs UNLV and did not return...Two key BC players got tossed in the 2H of the Virginia game in DT Washington and DE Kiwanuka who was rightfully upset after UVA LT Butler chopblocked him and inj’d his leg. BC missed three 1H FG’s but then blk’d a punt setting up a TD and at the end stopped UVA on a 4th & goal at the 2 to ice it. BC got a 57 yd run while running out the clock...

Oregon K Paul Martinez was inj’d and Matt Evensen, a walk-on frosh, hit 3 FG’s including a 51 yd’r in the 1H as UO upset Arizona St, 31-17....N Carolina QB Matt Baker left with a twisted ankle vs Louisville and while he did return, he sat out the final few series...

Duke was missing their top 3 RB’s and top 3 receivers due to injury and if you take away an 81 yd TD run by Ronnie Drummer in the 3Q, had a grand total of 47 yds offense the rest of the game. True frosh QB Asack, vs the powerful Miami D, hit 4 of 15 for 8 yds passing and rushed 16 times for 6 yds and it was 31-0 at the half with Miami having 4 TD drives totalling 8 plays...

Florida St lost OG Matt Meinrod, one of their top OL’s to a broken fibula and dislocated ankle and he will be out the rest of the season...VT RB Cedric Humes will be out up to 6 weeks but co-starter Mike Imoh should return from a sprained ankle when they face Maryland on October 20th.

MISLEADING FINALS, FRONTDOOR AND BACKDOOR COVERS

BG only led 21-14 late 3Q but after pulling ahead by 17 got a 26 yd int return to the Ohio 31. On 4th & 1 def holding gave them a FD and then 2 plays later Lane got a 22 yd TD run with 3:03 left to give the Falcons the frontdoor cover. BG did have 31-10 FD and 473-239 yd edges...

Fresno St had 2 short TD drives after TO’s, one a fumble on the 3rd play of the game which led to a 30 yd TD and the other a fumbled punt and Fresno drove 14 yds for a TD on the first play of the 4Q. Fresno got the cover when NMSt went for it on 4th & 4 at its own 31 and the pass fell incomplete. Five plays later FSU got the frontdoor cover with the TD with 5:58 left...

After an ugly 1H where Kansas and Kansas St combined for just 187 yds offense and KU led 3‑0, KSU got ahead of the spread with a FG after a fumble, a TD and then a safety to lead 12-3. KU’s last drive got to the K-St 16 but on 4th & 1 with :41 left they were SOD and K-St held on for the cover. During the game KU had a 46 yd FG blk’d, settled for a 28 yd FG, fmbl’d at their own 14, was SOD at the K-St 35, fmbl’d at the K-St 14 with 9:59 left and then were SOD at the 16 with :41 left...

UCLA/Cal fits in two categories, one is misleading finals and also frontdoor covers. Cal had 26-17 FD and 545‑395 yd edges. Cal, with a 12 game reg season win streak coming in led 40-28 in the 4Q but UCLA got a 28 yd TD pass with 1:35 left to lead 41‑40. Cal still appeared to have the cover in hand but Ayoob was int’d at his own 22 and it was ret’d 15 yds to the 7 with 1:01 left. UCLA ran the ball 3 times forcing a 4th & 3 with :06 and Cal out of time-outs. UCLA handed off to Drew who was hit at the 1 but powered into the EZ with no time left on the clock and they did not even attempt the xp. UCLA covered the 1.5 points spread in a deceiving 7 pt win...

Florida St did have 387 yds offense but surprisingly allowed WF 415. FSU only led 27-17 in the 4Q but got a 74 yd drive for a TD with 9:25 left and added an 83 yd, 4 play drive for a TD and the apparent front door cover with 5:38 left. WF converted on 4th & 10 on its final drive and got a 1 yd TD run by Marion on 4th down with :20 left for the backdoor cover...

Pitt led Cincinnati 38-13 but the Bearcats, who are known for last minute scores, recovered a fumble with 2:14 left and got a 1 play, 22 yd TD pass on the next play for the 38-20 final. Pitt ended the game at the UC 33 yd line taking a knee...

VT only led Marshall 14-7 at the half but came out a focused team in the 3Q outgaining the Herd 200-1 and scoring 17 points including yet another defensive TD to clinch it. Marshall had a 159-154 yd edge at the end of the 1H! They never did get ahead of the spread as they led by 34 but allowed a 17 yd TD pass with :19 left by Marshall...

Those that had Under 39’ in the Georgia/Tennessee game had to be bitter at the final results. This game was 13-7 heading into the 4Q. A 54 yd PR with 8:50 left put UGA up 20-7 and they then drove 73 yds in 9 plays. The Hokies got an 18 yd TD run with just 1:44 left to ice it. Tennessee would convert on 3rd & 10 and the Dawgs  on 3rd & 8 with no time left on the clock, got a 24 yd TD pass to put the game Over, 27-14.

TURNOVERS CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

TCU’s longest offensive “drive” was 36 yds in their game vs Wyoming. TCU benefitted from an amazing 7 turnovers. In the 1H, they had a 19 yd drive for a TD and after a 26 yd punt, got a 32 yd FG. They added an 18 yd drive for a 32 yd FG, a 14 yd drive for a 35 yd FG and led 12-7. They got their longest “drive” going 36 yds for a TD (after a 36 yd PR) with 1:42 left in the half, ret’d a fmbl for a TD and then after another short punt, got a 53 yd FG on the 2Q’s final play to lead 28-7. WY had their chances to get back in it and had the largest crowd of the Joe Glenn era at 27,723. They promptly marched 80 yds in 8 plays for a TD, 28-14. They had a 3rd & goal at the TCU 2 with 10:28 left but Bramlet fumbled. After forcing a punt, they drove down to a FD at the 15 but Bramlet fumbled again, this time with 7:08 left. After forcing another punt, WY was driving but was int’d at the 7 with 2:38 left ending their chances. No team can win when they have 7 turnovers...

Turnovers broke open the SC/Kentucky game. It was tied at 10 at the half and UK got a TD to apparently tie it at 17 in the 3Q but missed the xp which snapped a school record streak of 92 in a row. SC took a 24-16 lead and then UK turned the ball over on 3 consecutive poss including a fumble that was ret’d 19 yds for a TD and opened it up to a 30-16 lead. After another fumble, SC added a TD and they rolled to a 28 point win.

GAME CHANGING PLAYS

NC State had 10 penalties for 98 yds, most of them crucial keeping drives alive for Georgia Tech. There were two key game changing plays in the NCSt win Thurs Night. GT missed a 24 yd FG with 7:52 left and NCSt got an 80 yd TD pass on the next play. At the end of the game GT had a 1st & goal at the 2 but their pass was off the hands of Calvin Johnson and int’d in the EZ for a TB and NCSt, after having so many tough losses in games they should have won and having nothing go their way, actually had 2 plays in their favor and got the win...

For the 2nd straight week Purdue had a key play end up in a turnover in the endzone costing them momentum and the game. They were trailing 23‑17 in the 4Q and Brandon Kirsch, who threw for a career high 353 yds hit his TE in the EZ but the pass was bobbled and int’d. Much like ND did the previous week after the deflating TO, Iowa drove 80 yds for the clinching TD. Purdue’s D allowed over 500 yds for the 3rd consecutive game and is clearly one of the most disappointing units in the entire NCAA as last year’s D was outstanding and they had all 11 starters back...

Texas Tech, with 1:11 left in the game was at the Nebraska 12 yd line but the game appeared over as they were int’d at the 5 by Smith with :42 left but Smith, instead of going to a knee, tried to return the ball and the ball was knocked loose and TT rec’d at the 18. Given the reprieve, on 4th down. Tech hit a 10 yd TD pass with :12 left to pull out the win. Tech had blown a 21-0 lead.
