The World Series of Poker started in 1970 from Binion's Horseshoe casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. The event was created to determine the best poker player and continues to be held annually from Las Vegas in the summer.The winner of each event receives a bracelet plus a cash prize, which is based on the number of entrants and buy-in amounts. Over the years, the tournament has grown in both the number of events and in the number of individuals. Games that will be played include No Limit Hold'em, Pot Limit Hold'em, Seven Card Stud, Omaha Hi-Low, Pot Limit Omaha, H.O.R.S.E., Seven Card Razz, 2-7 Triple Drawa and other variations.

The "Main Event" is always the last event of the World Series of Poker or WSOP. It is a no-limit hold'em tournament, which has a $10,000 buy-in. Since 1991, the cash prize has been no less than $1,000,000 and as high as $12,000,000, which occurred in 2006. The winner also receives a bracelet, plus the title of WSOP "Main Event" champion.

The 2016 World Series of Poker is the 46th annual event and will be held at the Rio All Suite Hotel and Casino from Las Vegas, which begins June 1. The "Main Event" starts on July 9 and the final table will be played for the eighth straight year in November.

Joe McKeehen was the 2015 winner of the WSOP "Main Event." There were 6,420 entries in the event and the first-place prize was $7.68 million. Stu Ungar and Johnny Moss are the only players to have won the WSOP "Main Event" three times. Ungar, Doyle Brunson and Johnny Chan are the only players to have repeated in the "Main Event."
