CHAMPIONS LEAGUE MATCHDAY 2 ODDS & PREDICTIONS

The 2020-21 UEFA Champions League group stages continue this week with Matchday 2 action and there will be 16 games scheduled for Tuesday Oct. 27 and Wednesday Oct. 28.

After the Matchday 1 action, the oddsmakers have adjusted the future odds on all 32 clubs.

Along with eight top-rated selections for Matchday 2 below, I've also added my score predictions for the 16 games.

KRASNODAR VS. CHELSEA

SCORE PREDICTION: CHELSEA 3 KRASNODAR 0

TIP: CHELSEA TO WIN TO NIL AT 13/10

Krasnodar’s first home game in the Champions League looks likely to end in defeat to Chelsea.

The Russian side have a terrible injury crisis, especially in attacking areas. Forward Marcus Berg and their main creative talents, Rémy Cabella and Wanderson, are out of the game.

Chelsea are yet to get the balance right this year, but 0-0s against Sevilla and Manchester United at least show that they might have improved defensively.

The addition of Édouard Mendy in goal has improved Chelsea a lot. The Blues have taken a strong squad out to Russia and should win the game comfortably.

CLUB BRUGES V LAZIO

SCORE PREDICTION: CLUB BRUGES 2 LAZIO 1

TIP: CLUB BRUGGE TO WIN AT 19/20

Lazio beat Borussia Dortmund in their opening game but Covid has ripped through their squad, leaving them without nine players for the trip to Belgium to play Club Bruges.

Bruges won at Zenit St Petersburg last time out and also got a draw at Real Madrid in last season’s group stages.

They have dominated the Belgian league in recent years, and although their form this season has been patchier, they still have talent in attacking areas.

Even at 19/20 they look a fair bet to win the game.

Lazio’s XI will be extremely unfamiliar and unused to playing with each other, and with a win in the bag on matchday one they can perhaps afford a small slip up here.

JUVENTUS VS. BARCELONA

SCORE PREDICTION: JUVENTUS 2 BARCELONA 1

TIP: JUVENTUS TO WIN AT 2/1

Juventus and Barcelona are fading giants who are unlikely to contest the deepest stages of this year’s Champions League.

Juve have been poor in front of goal under Andrea Pirlo with three draws in their last five games, including against relative minnows Hellas Verona and Crotone. But they are 2/1 to win this game, and Barcelona’s problems arguably go deeper.

They were deservedly beaten 3-1 in El Clásico by Real Madrid in their last league game, and even though Cristiano Ronaldo may miss out, Barcelona’s decense looks leaky enough that Juve can score a few goals.

MANCHESTER UNITED VS. RB LEIPZIG

SCORE PREDICTION: RB LEIPZIG 2 MANCHESTER UNITED 1

TIP: RB LEIPZIG TO WIN AT 2/1

Despite losing star striker Timo Werner over the summer, Leipzig are the early-season pace-setters in the Bundesliga and they look a value bet to get a huge win away to Manchester United and blow Group H wide open.

United secured a surprise 2-1 win at PSG on matchday one but their home form has been extremely weak for a while now.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer still does not appear to know his best team or formation, while Leipzig have been playing exciting, coherent football for a while under young manager Julian Nagelsmann.

The Germans have not lost in 11 away games and can win as outsiders at Old Trafford.

TUESDAY, OCT. 27, 2020

SHAKHTAR DONETSK VS. INTERNAZIONALE

SCORE SCORE PREDICTION: SHAKHTAR DONETSK 1 INTERNAZIONALE 1

TIP: DRAW AT 29/10

Shakhtar Donetsk scored a stunning 3-2 win at Real Madrid on the opening week of the Champions League group stages.

The Ukrainian side had ten players out with Covid-19 and yet went 3-0 up in Madrid. That win means that Shakhtar would likely settle for a draw against Inter, who slipped up to a 2-2 draw against Borussia Monchengladbach in their first game.

That said, this will be a tight group and Inter would probably also be content with a point here. Antonio Conte’s side drew away to Lazio earlier this season, and their only wins have come against relatively soft opponents. The draw price of 29/10 implies that this will be a high-scorer, but I’m not so sure.

A stalemate looks a good bet.

MARSEILLE VS. MANCHESTER CITY

SCORE SCORE PREDICTION: MARSEILLE 1 MANCHESTER CITY 1

TIP: MARSEILLE +1.5 AT 9/10

Manchester City turned in a poor performance in a 1-1 draw at West Ham last weekend.

That is a fixture City usually win with ease, and the result added to a sense that all is not right with manager Pep Guardiola’s side.

City travel to Marseille without both Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Aguero. Marseille are not a great side, as they showed in a 1-0 loss at Olympiakos last time out. But they did win away to PSG this year, and given that Man City won their opener against FC Porto, a draw would hardly be catastrophic for them here.

At 1/3 City seem far too short and Marseille are worth a bet on the handicap.

LIVERPOOL VS. MIDTJYLLAND

SCORE SCORE PREDICTION: LIVERPOOL 4 MIDTJYLLAND 0

TIP: LIVERPOOL/LIVERPOOL HALF-TIME/FULL-TIME AT 1/2

Liverpool got the better of Ajax and Sheffield United without Virgil van Dijk and should have no problems against Champions League group stage debutants Midtjylland of Denmark.

Midtjylland were soundly beaten 4-0 at home by Atalanta on matchday one. Atalanta had 18 shots on goal in that match and could easily have won by more.

Liverpool’s front three are all fit for this game, and even if only two of them start they should overwhelm the Midtjylland defense.

Liverpool will be desperate to get ahead early in this game in order to conserve energy for a grueling few weeks ahead, and I expect them to do just that in a comfortable win.

ATALANTA VS. AJAX

SCORE SCORE PREDICTION: ATALANTA 3 AJAX 1

TIP: ATALANTA TO WIN AT 3/4

Ajax come into this match off the back of an astonishing 13-0 win away to VVV Venlo in the Eredivisie, but last year’s quarter-finalists Atalanta are better than any team in Holland and Ajax could be swiftly brought back down to earth.

As discussed above, Atalanta were superb away to Midtjylland on Matchday one. They are going at three goals a game in Serie A and look just as potent as they did last year.

Ajax were rather uninspiring in a 1-0 loss to Liverpool on matchday one. Most of their class of 2018/19 have left and a period of rebuilding looks likely for the Amsterdam side.

Atalanta are a much better side at the moment and look a fair bet at 3.4.
