CHAMPIONS LEAGUE MATCHDAY 5 ODDS & PREDICTIONS

The 2020-21 UEFA Champions League group stages continue this week with Matchday 5 action and there will be 16 games scheduled for Tuesday Dec. 1 and Wednesday Dec. 2.

After the Matchday 4 action, the oddsmakers have adjusted the future odds on all 32 clubs.

Along with eight top-rated selections for Matchday 5 below, I've also added my score predictions for the 16 games.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE MATCHDAY 5 BEST BETS

WEDNESDAY, DEC. 2, 2020

KRASNODAR VS. RENNES

SCORE PREDICTION: KRASNODAR 2 RENNES 2

TIP: OVER 2.5 GOALS AT 1/1

This match is essentially a playoff for who finishes third and qualifies for the Europa League.

Rennes drew with Krasnodar last time out and are doing better on goal difference than the Russians, so any score draw would likely be a good result for them.

Both sides have put in some decent performances, and Rennes were probably unlucky to lose 2-1 to Chelsea last time out.

Krasnodar, meanwhile, went down to two late winners by Sevilla and showed their quality by drawing in France. These are naturally attacking sides, so it is a surprise to see over 2.5 as big as 1/1.

There is motivation for both sides to go for it, and so it should be a high scoring game.

BORUSSIA DORTMUND VS. LAZIO

SCORE PREDICTION: BORUSSIA DORTMUND 3-1 LAZIO

TIP: BORUSSIA DORTMUND TO WIN AT 3/5

Lazio scored a shock win in the reverse fixture but both sides have had very different fortunes since then.

Dortmund have won their last three group games, all to nil, while Lazio’s defence has looked extremely dodgy.

They have conceded 16 goals in nine Serie A matches to date, most recently a 3-1 home loss against Udinese.

Dortmund’s Bundesliga form has hit a bit of a wobble, but they are usually trustworthy at home in Europe.

Back them to avenge their matchday one defeat.

MANCHESTER UNITED VS. PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN

SCORE PREDICTION: PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN 2 MANCHESTER UNITED 1

TIP: PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN TO WIN AT 11/8

Manchester United have beaten PSG twice in their last three games, but both wins have felt very surprising.

PSG dominated their most recent match at Old Trafford two years ago, winning 2-0 and limiting United to just one shot on target.

Despite their results in the group so far there really is a big quality gap between these sides, and PSG make a lot of appeal at 11/8 to win.

Their need is greater: United could lose this and still know that a draw at RB Leipzig puts them through. Kylian Mbappé and Neymar are both fit and they can exploit United’s terrible home form this season.

SEVILLA VS. CHELSEA

SCORE PREDICTION: SEVILLA 0 CHELSEA 0

TIP: DRAW AT 12/5

Chelsea will go into this game knowing that a draw is an excellent result, as it will leave them only needing to beat Krasnodar at home to win the group.

The reverse fixture was an extremely cagey 0-0, and although Chelsea have become more expansive since then, their 0-0 with Tottenham at the weekend is a reminder that their big games can produce few goals.

The Blues are likely to rest some key attackers and adopt a defensive stragey, relying on their new found confidence at the back.

Sevilla are a good side who will probe hard, but they might struggle to break their opponents down.

Back Chelsea to get the draw they need.

TUESDAY, DEC. 1, 2020

SHAKHTAR DONETSK VS. REAL MADRID

SCORE PREDICTION: SHAKHTAR DONETSK 0 REAL MADRID 3

TIP: REAL MADRID -1.5 AT 11/10

Shakhtar Donetsk amazingly won the reverse fixture 3-2 but that match has since looked like a fluke.

The Ukrainian side lost 10-0 on aggregate to Borussia Mönchengladbach and are beset with Covid-related absences.

Real are extremely inconsistent but have scored at least twice in all four of their group games so far.

They got the better of Inter over their two matches, and Karim Benzema will likely play here.

Even if Real do rotate they should have far too much for Shakhtar’s makeshift backline.

ATALANTA VS. MIDTJYLLAND

SCORE PREDICTION: ATALANTA 2 MIDTJYLLAND 0

TIP: ATALANTA TO WIN TO NIL AT 21/20

Atalanta scored a superb 2-0 victory at Liverpool last time out which puts them in a great position to qualify.

This match against Midtjylland, who have lost all four games and have a goal difference of -9, should not be a problem.

The usual Atalanta bet is to back them to win a high-scoring games, but at Anfield there were signs that the team is becoming more streewise defensively.

That theme has been reflected in their domestic games. Since the 5-0 loss at home to Liverpool all four of their games have seen under 2.5 goals.

Atalanta to win to nil looks a good bet at 21/20.

LIVERPOOL VS. AJAX

SCORE PREDICTION: LIVERPOOL 2 AJAX 2

TIP: DRAW AND BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE AT 15/4

Liverpool have a horrendous injury list with about six usual first teamers on the sidelines.

Their squad is deeper than Jürgen Klopp might have you believe, but they make little appeal to win this match at 4/6.

A draw would do for Liverpool, who can rely on beating Midtjylland in the final game to top the group.

A draw would leave Ajax needing to beat Atalanta at home, a scenario they would have taken after the draw was made.

It is unusual to tip a draw in a game between two such attacking sides, so it might be best to take it one step further and back draw and both teams to score at 15/4 - i.e. any draw bar a 0-0.

BORUSSIA MONCHENGLADBACH VS. INTER MILAN

SCORE PREDICTION: BORUSSIA MÖNCHENGLADBACH 2 INTER MILAN 1

TIP: BORUSSIA MONCHENGLADBACH TO WIN AT 21/10

Despite failing to win any of their first four games, there is still a small chance that Inter could qualify for the knockout stages.

They would have to win away to Gladbach though, and both sides’ group stage displays suggest that Inter are a terrible bet at 6/5.

Gladbach have been the competition’s surprise packages this year, deservedly drawing with Real and Inter before demolishing Shakhtar Donetsk twice.

They thrashed Schalke 04 by a 4-1 count last time out in the Bundesliga and look in great form. A draw would probably guarantee qualification, but topping the group is a big motiviation for the hosts.

A win here would help them do that, and at 21/10 I will be backing it.
