Protesters rally before Confed Cup opener

BRASILIA, Brazil (AP) - Hundreds of protesters complaining about the high cost of staging the World Cup have demonstrated in front of the National Stadium in Brasilia just hours before Brazil played Japan in the opening match of the Confederations Cup.

Riot police were called in to keep demonstrators from getting too close to the stadium as thousands of fans arrived for the inaugural match in the nation's capital Saturday. The protesters started chanting and marching about a mile away from the venue.

A few tear gas bombs were thrown by the police to try to control the protesters as they moved near the venue. Local media reported that police also shot rubber bullets and used pepper spray to disperse the crowd as the kickoff approached. The match inside the stadium went on as usual.
