ISTANBUL (AP) - It was disappointing night for Latin American teams at the Under 20-World Cup as Greece scored late to beat Mexico 2-1 and South American champion Colombia was held to 1-1 by Australia on Saturday.
Greece, making its debut in the 24-team tournament, scored first in Gaziantep through Andreas Bouchalakis in the 16th minute.
Mexico's Jorge Espericueta drew the CONCACAF champion level in the 40th of the Group D match with a wonderful free kick from 25 yards. Dimitrios Kolovos then made a turn in the area and scored a late winner in the 88th.
In Group C, Colombia came from a goal down against Australia in Trabzon.
Sixteen-year-old Daniel De Silva, the youngest player at the tournament, opening the scoring in the 46th, finishing a strong run by eluding Felipe Aguilar in the area and cooling slotting it in.
With time running out, Jhon Cordoba took a pass from Felipe Aguilar, turned and fired past out-of-position goalkeeper Paul Izzo.
Security has been stepped up at all seven sites following weeks of sometimes violent protests. The protests began over plans to replace a popular park in Istanbul with a mall and broadened into discontent over what opponents say is Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's increasingly authoritarian and meddlesome ways.
The matches have not been targeted by protesters but on Saturday Turkish police used water cannon to disperse thousands gathered in Istanbul's Taksim Square to observe a memorial for four people killed during recent anti-government protests.
The host team showed no apparent effect from the protests as it made an ideal start with a 3-0 win over El Salvador to top Group C.
Cenk Sahin launched an attack down the right side in the ninth before sending a low cross for Salih Ucan to slot home.
The two teamed up again after halftime, as Ucan slipped a pass to Sahin, who scored the first of his two goals in the 46th. Seventeen minutes later, Sahin slotted home inside the far post to put the match out of reach.
In the other Group D match, Paraguay and Mali settled for a 1-1 draw.
Mali's Adama Niane gave his side the lead after three minutes before the favorite Paraguay drew level in the 7th courtesy of Jorge Rojas.
