Solo, Wambach highlight US roster

WASHINGTON (AP) - U.S. national team stars Abby Wambach, Alex Morgan and Hope Solo are among 18 players chosen by coach Tom Sermanni to play Mexico on Sept. 3.

Due to limited training time, Sermanni did not call up any European-based players with the exception of Yael Averbuch, who already will be on the East Coast to attend a wedding.

Wambach set the career goals mark earlier this season, surpassing Mia Hamm, and has 160 international goals. Morgan is recovering from an injury suffered while playing for Portland of the National Women's Soccer League. Solo was the anchor of the Americans' gold medal run at the London Olympics last year.

Morgan was injured on Aug. 7 and her status for Portland's playoff run is uncertain.

``We will evaluate Alex's recovery from her injury when she comes into camp,'' Sermanni said. ``At this point, the most important thing is that she is completely fit and healthy. If our medical staff says she's ready to play, then she'll play.''

The roster features 15 players from the NWSL; two college players in Crystal Dunn from North Carolina and Morgan Brian from Virginia; and Averbuch, who plays for Goteborg FC in Sweden. While the roster features the usual veteran contingent, Sermanni did give first call-ups to defender Leigh Ann Robinson and midfielder Erika Tymrak.

The roster:

Goalkeepers: Nicole Barnhart (FC Kansas City), Hope Solo (Seattle Reign FC);

Defenders: Rachel Buehler (Portland Thorns FC), Crystal Dunn (North Carolina), Kristie Mewis (FC Kansas City), Christie Rampone (Sky Blue FC), Leigh Ann Robinson (FC Kansas City), Becky Sauerbrunn (FC Kansas City);

Midfielders: Yael Averbuch (Goteborg), Morgan Brian (Virginia), Lauren Holiday (FC Kansas City), Carli Lloyd (Western New York Flash), Heather O'Reilly (Boston Breakers), Megan Rapinoe (Seattle Reign FC), Erika Tymrak (FC Kansas City);

Forwards: Sydney Leroux (Boston Breakers), Alex Morgan (Portland Thorns FC), Abby Wambach (Western New York Flash).
