Spain fan found dead amid celebrations
June 30, 2008
MADRID, Spain (AP) -A 40-year-old fan wearing a red Spain jersey was found dead in Madrid after late-night celebrations marking the European Championship title, media reports said Monday.
The man's body was found in the center of the Spanish capital with head injuries apparently sustained from a fall, reports said.
In all, 65,000 turned out to watch Spain's 1-0 victory over Germany at the Colon Square public viewing area on Sunday. There were 52 arrests.
This was Spain's first major trophy in 44 years, the last one coming in the European Championship at home with a victory over the Soviet Union.
