US goalkeeper agrees to join Celtic
September 26, 2008
GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) -Dominic Cervi will become the fourth American in the Scottish Premier League after agreeing to join Celtic.
The 22-year-old University of Tulsa player had been without a team after spurning interest from Major League Soccer's the Chicago Fire. Cervi will not be playing with the first team for now.
Celtic manager Gordon Strachan said Friday the team's goalkeeping coach expects Cervi to be a two-year project.
``So don't expect anything,'' Strachan said. ``If it is quicker than that then great.''
Cervi's parents are Italian, meaning he should be able to play in Europe without needing a work permit.
The other Americans in the league are all midfielders - Maurice Edu and DaMarcus Beasley at Rangers and Michael Videira at Hamilton.
