FIFA, UEFA make peace with Euro host Poland
October 10, 2008
ZURICH, Switzerland (AP) -International and European soccer authorities met with the Polish government Friday, completing an agreement to restore order to the sport in a country co-hosting the 2012 Euro Championship.
FIFA and UEFA had threatened to suspend Poland if the government prevented the Polish Football Federation from holding an independent election to choose a new leader.
The agreement was set at FIFA headquarters Friday to ensure that an election overseen by FIFA and UEFA will take place Oct. 30.
The dispute had threatened Poland's upcoming World Cup qualifying matches and its co-hosting rights to Euro 2012 with Ukraine.
The impasse was settled Monday when the government compromised on the brink of a deadline set by FIFA.
FIFA and UEFA will help the Polish sports ministry monitor the sport ``to help in the fight against criminal activities in and around football,'' FIFA said in a statement.
Poland's government has long criticized the Polish federation and outgoing president Michal Listkiewicz for failing to deal with soccer corruption.
Four men are running to replace Listkiewicz as president: former international stars Zbigniew Boniek and Grzegorz Lato; the federation's current secretary general, Zdzislaw Krecina; and Tomasz Jagodzinski.
Poland hosts the Czech Republic on Saturday in a World Cup qualifying game in Chorzow.
