UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) -Asjha Jones had 19 points and six rebounds to help the Connecticut Sun beat the San Antonio Silver Stars 71-58 Sunday.
Sophia Young scored 22 points for San Antonio (1-3), which was without Becky Hammon, who was playing for Russia at a tournament in Latvia. The Silver Stars also were without Vickie Johnson due to a death in the family and Shanna Crossley, who was injured.
``I thought we competed well in our situation, but Connecticut played well enough to win,' San Antonio coach Dan Hughes said. ``They did a good job of having timely plays. Their ability to get to the glass was probably the separation factor today.'
The Sun outrebounded the Silver Stars 38-31.
``We stayed resilient and made some plays down the stretch,' Connecticut coach Mike Thibault said.
Erin Phillips scored six of her 11 points in the fourth period for Connecticut (3-3) and rookie center Chante Black had 11 points and eight rebounds before leaving with a sprained elbow in the third quarter.
Ruth Riley had 10 points and seven rebounds for San Antonio.
San Antonio, which went the first 3:21 of the final period without scoring, got to within eight points before Kerri Gardin's 3-pointer with 3:50 left gave the Sun a 65-54 lead.
The Sun used an 11-2 run to end the first half and take a 39-31 lead at halftime.
