Liberty upend Sparks as road 'dogs

LOS ANGELES (AP) -Shameka Christon scored a career-high 28 points and the New York Liberty rallied for an 89-78 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks on Tuesday.

Janel McCarville added 15 points and tied a season best with eight rebounds for the Liberty (8-7). Cathrine Kraayeveld had 14 points, Leilani Mitchell scored 13 points and Loree Moore tied a career high with nine assists.

``I'm just an unconscious shooter,'' said Christon, who is averaging 22.0 points in her past four games. ``It's important for me to mix it up, whether its the outside shot or getting to the basket. That's what I've kept in mind.''

Candace Parker had 18 points, 10 rebounds, four blocks, three assists and three steals for the Sparks (10-5). DeLisha Milton-Jones added 15 points and Lisa Leslie had 12 points before fouling out with 6:55 to play.

``We're not picking up our defensive assignments and digging deep to finish a game,'' Milton-Jones said. ``Then when we go on offense, there's no continuity. There's confusion.''

``At this point of the season, we should be clicking on all cylinders. But right now, there's a lot of guesswork.''

Los Angeles began the fourth quarter with a 62-51 lead. But after narrowing the deficit to 66-61, New York used a 22-8 spree to move ahead 83-74 with 1:41 remaining.

McCarville led the surge with seven points and Christon and Mitchell each added six, as the Liberty made 11 of 14 shots in the final quarter.

``Getting Lisa out of the game was huge for us,'' McCarville said. ``That really opened up the inside and we were able to knock down big shots. If she had been in the whole game, it would've been a different story.''

The Sparks missed 10 of 15 shots and grabbed just three rebounds to the Liberty's nine in the fourth quarter.
