Silver Stars 79, Shock 72

SAN ANTONIO (AP) -Becky Hammon had 19 points, 10 in overtime, and Sophia Young added 27 to lead the San Antonio Silver Stars to a 79-72 overtime win over the Detroit Shock Tuesday night.

Ann Wauters also added 17 points with nine rebounds, in the second overtime game for the Silver Stars in a week. They lost to the Houston Comets 82-81 last Tuesday.

``I think we learned a lot during our overtime match-ups this season,'' Wauters said. ``No one on this team likes to lose, especially during overtime.''

Down by two with 14.8 seconds in the fourth quarter, Wauters cut to the basket and hit a wide open layup to tie it 65-65.

``I had a wide open shot so I took it,'' Wauters said. ``I thought it was early to take a quick shot, but everything worked out.''

Detroit had one last shot to win it in regulation, but Deanna Nolan's jumper with a second left bounced off the rim into Young's hands.

Then the Silver Stars took over. They fell behind early in overtime when Katie Smith hit a 3-pointer to open the period, but Hammon began driving to the basket and getting to the foul line.

``Eventually, you just keep being aggressive and eventually it'll come around to you and reward you,'' said Hammon, who also had out six assists. ``That's just what we kept trying to do, keep playing aggressive in overtime and not get timid.''

The Silver Stars were 8-for-8 the line in the extra period, with Hammon hitting all six of her attempts.

Katie Smith led the Shock with 17 points, while Kara Braxton had 16, and Nolan and Plenette Pierson both had 11.

Cheryl Ford had 10 points, and eight rebounds, returning to action along with Pierson. Ford missed last game with a strained left knee. Pierson, who also had a strained right knee, came back after missing the last two games.

``Our team played with a lot of heart. We're a little banged up right now,'' Shock coach Bill Laimbeer said. ``We also have Cheryl and Plenette out there on one leg for us and they still did well for us tonight. We played with heart and had a chance to win.''

Pierson and Braxton both fouled out in overtime.

The Shock had been 5-0 all-time in San Antonio.
