Mercury center has knee surgery
August 12, 2008
PHOENIX (AP) -Mercury center Tangela Smith underwent arthroscopic surgery on her right knee Tuesday and is expected to recover in four to six weeks.
Phoenix team physician Dr. Evan Lederman performed the procedure on the 6-foot-4 Smith, the Mercury's third-leading scorer at 11.1 points per game.
The defending champion Mercury probably would have to make the playoffs to get Smith back this season. They are last in the Western Conference, three games out of the final playoff spot with seven remaining.
Smith started all 34 games last year and 25 of 27 this season, which resumes Aug. 28 against San Antonio after the monthlong Olympic break.
