Silver Stars 77, Mercury 55

PHOENIX (AP) -Sophia Young scored 18 points and Ann Wauters added 15 points and nine rebounds to lead the San Antonio Silver Stars to a 77-55 rout of the Phoenix Mercury on Thursday night, the first game for both teams after the monthlong Olympic break.

Becky Hammon, winner of a bronze medal playing for Russia, added 13 points for the Silver Stars, who have the best record in the league at 19-9.

Diana Taurasi had 13 points and 10 rebounds for the last-place Mercury, who are 2 1/2 games out of a playoff spot a year after winning the WNBA championship.

The Silver Stars ran off 12 straight points in the second quarter, including two 3-pointers by veteran reserve Ruth Riley, who came into the game 3-of-16 from beyond the arc.

San Antonio held Phoenix to 3-of-17 shooting in the second quarter and 21 first-half points, nine under the Mercury's previous low this season.

The Silver Stars led 45-21 at the break and opened up a 56-23 lead in the third quarter against Phoenix. The Mercury finished 19-of-69 (28 percent) from the field, held to their lowest point total of the season by 17 points.

The Mercury's two Olympians, league-leading scorers Taurasi and Cappie Pondexter were held a combined 6-of-21 from the field. San Antonio's Hammon missed her first four shots but hit two 3-pointers late and added five assists.

With the win, the Silver Stars swept the three games from Phoenix this season, the first such sweep in franchise history.

The Mercury played without starting inside player Tangela Smith, who underwent knee surgery earlier this month and is out of the season.
