Wednesday’s Big 12 Tips

There are three nationally ranked teams from the Big 12 in the latest AP Top 25 and two of those programs will be in action this Wednesday night in key conference matchups.

In the first Big 12 battle of the night, the Kansas State Wildcats will be on the road against No. 20 Oklahoma. Next up is a conference tilt between the Iowa State Cyclones and No. 8 Texas Tech from United Super Markets Arena in Lubbock.

Betting Matchup

Coming off a big 58-57 upset of Iowa State on Saturday as nine-point road underdogs, the Wildcats stay on the road against another tough conference foe. Kansas State is an even 2-2 straight-up in early Big 12 play as part of an overall record of 12-4. It has also gone 2-2 against the spread in the four games with the total staying UNDER in seven of the Wildcats’ last nine contests. Barry Brown Jr. scored the game winning layup in the closing seconds of Saturday’s win as part of his game-high 23 points. The senior guard has eclipsed his team-high 15.2-point scoring average in each of his last three starts.

The Sooners bounced back from last Tuesday’s 66-59 loss to Texas Tech as seven-point road underdogs with a tight 76-75 victory against TCU at home on Saturday as 3 ½-point favorites. The total ended as a PUSH in that game after staying UNDER in six of their previous seven contests. The PUSH against the Red Raiders was the first time Oklahoma failed to cover in its previous nine games as part of 12-2-2 record ATS overall. Senior guard Christian James is the Sooners’ leading scorer with 16.8 PPG, but he has failed to reach that average in each of his last eight games.

Betting Trends

-- The Wildcats have failed to cover in seven of their last 10 games overall and the total has stayed UNDER in 18 of their last 26 games following a SU win.

-- The Sooners are 3-8 ATS in their last 11 games after failing to cover in their previous outing. The have covered in six of their last seven home games with the total staying UNDER in each of those seven contests.

-- The home team is 4-0-1 ATS in the last five meetings and the total has gone OVER in four of the last five meetings at Oklahoma.

Iowa State Cyclones at No. 8 Texas Tech Red Raiders (ESPNU, 9:00 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds: Texas Tech -5, Total 132 ½

Betting Matchup

Prior to Saturday’s loss to Kansas State, the Cyclones were on the wrong end of a 73-70 loss to Baylor as two-point road favorites. This followed an important 77-60 win at home against Kansas as 2 ½-point favorites on Jan. 5. Total has stayed UNDER in four of their last six games. Iowa State is averaging 79.8 PPG this season, but that average has dropped to 68.3 points through its first four Big 12 games. Senior guard Marial Shayok has led the way with 19.4 PPG, but he ended the game against Kansas State with just nine points in 38 minutes of play.

The Red Raiders are at the top of the Big 12 in early play at 4-0 SU. Saturday’s 68-62 win against Texas as slight 1 ½-point road underdogs was the first time they covered in their last six games. Texas Tech’s win at home against the Sooners last week ended as a PUSH. Going back to a Dec. 1 win against Memphis, the Red Raiders are 9-1 SU in their last 10 games with a costly 2-7-1 record covering the closing number. They are averaging 72.7 PPG while holding their opponents to just 54 points on defense. This is the second-best points-allowed average in the nation.

-- The Cyclones have failed to cover in 13 of their last 18 road games, but they are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 Wednesday games. The total has stayed UNDER in six of their last seven games against a conference opponent.

-- The Red Raiders are 1-4-1 ATS in six previous home games with a 1-8-2 record ATS in their last 11 conference matchups. The total has stayed UNDER in seven of their last 10 games at home.

-- The home team has covered the closing spread in four of the last five meetings and the total has stayed UNDER in 10 of the last 14 matchups.
