Tuesday’s Tip Sheet

A trio of nationally ranked teams in the ACC, Big Ten and Big East face a tough test this Tuesday night in three of the more interesting betting matchups on the slate.

The No. 5 Florida State Seminoles will try and keep things moving forward in a road game against the Virginia Cavaliers. The Purdue Boilermakers are also on the road in New Jersey to take on the No. 25 Rutgers Scarlet Knights. Tuesday’s nightcap in our Nation’s Capital pits the No. 16 Butler Bulldogs against the Georgetown University Hoyas.

Betting Matchup

Florida State is the ACC team getting most of the national attention these days with a straight-up 10-game winning streak. Going back to a season-opening loss to Pittsburgh, the Seminoles are 7-1 in conference play as part of a SU record of 17-2. They failed to cover in Saturday’s tight 85-84 home victory over Notre Dame as nine-point favorites. They are 0-3 against the spread in their last three games with the total going OVER in four of their last five games.

Wyatt Wilkes scored 19 points in the win against the Fighting Irish.

The Cavaliers got past Wake Forest 65-63 on the road Saturday in overtime but they could not cover the 7 ½ points. The are 5-4 (SU and ATS) in the ACC and 13-6 SU (6-13 ATS) overall. Virginia came up short against Florida State on Jan. 15 in a 54-50 road loss but it covered as a 6 ½-point underdog. The total stayed UNDER 113 ½ points in that game. The Cavaliers are averaging just 56.0 points per game but they are ranked first in points allowed (50.4)

-- The Seminoles are 14-3 ATS in their last 17 games played on Tuesday with the total going OVER in four of their last five road games.

-- The Cavaliers have failed to cover in 13 of their last 17 games and this includes a 1-5 record ATS in their last six home games.

-- The series is tied 3-3 both SU and ATS over the last six meetings with the total staying UNDER in five of those games. Virginia has the slight 6-4 edge SU and ATS in the last 10 games between the two.

Betting Matchup

Purdue (11-9 SU, 9-11 ATS) improved to 4-5 SU in Big Ten play with last Friday’s 70-51 win at home against Wisconsin as a four-point favorite. This was just its second SU win in the six games with a 2-5 record ATS over the last seven outings. The total has gone OVER in three of its last five games. The Boilermakers got 14 points from Isaiah Thompson in Friday’s win.

Sophomore forward Trevon Williams (11.0 PPG) was held to just five points in that game.

The Scarlet Knights are 15-5 SU with a 6-3 conference record after beating Nebraska 75-72 on Saturday. They failed to cover the 13 ½ points at home after going 10-0 ATS in 10 previous games. The total went OVER in Rutgers’ last two contests after staying UNDER in seven previous games. It has now won its last 14 home games SU.

Ron Harper Jr. leads a trio of players averaging at least 10 PPG. The Scarlet Knights are holding opponents to 60.7 points a game.

Betting Matchup

Butler snapped a SU three-game slide with last Friday night’s 89-85 overtime victory at home against Marquette. The losing streak ATS moved to four games closing as a six-point favorite. The total in that game went OVER 135 ½ points and it has gone OVER in the Bulldogs’ last five games. They are 4-3 SU in the Big East and 16-4 overall (11-8-1 ATS).

Kamar Baldwin (16.2 PPG) led the way on Friday with 31 points, including 19 in the final eight minutes.

With three SU losses in their last four games, the Hoyas are 2-5 in Big East play. They failed to cover as four-point road underdogs in last Wednesday’s 66-57 loss to Xavier. Georgetown (12-8 SU, 9-10-1 ATS) are just 1-5-1 ATS over the past seven games with the total staying UNDER in six of eight games. The Hoyas are averaging 78.0 PPG behind a pair of players with at least 16 points a game. They are allowing 73.3 points a game on defense.
