Odds Subject to Change

These two ACC schools are very similar, each playing with something to prove and a bit of a chip on their shoulders. However, both schools have been nationally recognized. Virginia Tech saw an impressive victory over Villanova earlier this season, which propelled them into the AP Top 25.

A loss to Penn State has seen the Hokies drop out, as Clemson enters the AP Top 25 after a convincing home win over Maryland and victory over Alabama.

Although Clemson has yet to lose, they are traveling which oddsmakers have taken interest in. With the similarities of these two team's resumes thus far, and Clemson traveling, oddsmakers are unsure who will win as there is no opening spread. This is a 'pick em' game, in which there is no spread and the betting lines are EVEN.

Betting Analysis – Clemson Tigers

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 6-0
  • ATS: 5-0
  • SU - Home: 3-0
  • SU - Away: 2-0
  • O/U: 1-4

Clemson has looked like one of the better dark horses to win any conference, let alone the ACC. The Tigers are a perfect 6-0 SU and have covered the spread in every game they've played, which include a few impressive wins.

The Tigers also seem to be comfortable on the road, winning neutral site games against Mississippi State, Alabama and Purdue. The Tigers have passed every early season test thus far, playing behind one of the nation's best defenses.

The numbers are quite staggering, as Clemson is mirroring an ACC copy-and-paste version of the Mountain West's San Diego State Aztecs. The Tigers are holding teams to just 51.4 points per game, which ranks second in the nation. They also pose a defensive rating of 75.4 which ranks seventh in the nation.

The trio of Aamir Simms, Nick Honor and Al-Amir Dawes is a nightmare for opposing backcourts, as the three have already accumulated a combined 24 steals in six games. The rest of the team has 20.

It's safe to say Clemson's offense relies on their defense, as their highest point scorer in Simms averaging only 11.6 per game. The Tigers do have eight players who average 4,6 points per game or more, with a good mix of veteran leaders and young talent.

Betting Analysis – Virginia Tech Hokies

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 4-1
  • ATS: 2-3
  • SU - Home: 3-1
  • SU - Away: 1-0
  • O/U: 3-2

Virginia Tech is looking to get back into winning form after dropping an ugly game to Penn State. The regression from Virginia Tech was expected, but the Hokies didn't look good against their Big Ten competition. Regardless, they now play at home against a team that struggles to score the basketball.

Virginia Tech doesn't have a top defense nationally, but the Hokies do alright themselves. They hold opponents to just 65 points per game, which is 85th in the nation, although the defensive rating at 97.9 is not too convincing. The Hokies do have many contributors however, such as Clemson, but the only difference is that they are much more consistent on offense.

Three players average a double-digit point total for Virginia Tech ,beginning with Keve Aluma who averages a near double-double. Nahiem Alleyne and Tyrece Radford are the other two big contributors for Virginia Tech, but they also see solid production from others.

Cartier Diarra, Wabissa Bede and Hunter Carroor all average 6.6 points per game or more, while Justyn Mutts averages 5.4 points and 6.2 boards per game. What is Virginia Tech's downfall, especially against a team like Clemson, is they don't force a lot of turnovers.

This game will be won by whichever team can create more steals and scoring opportunities, which goes to Clemson. Virginia Tech ranks 288th nationally in total steals, which is disappointing with the amount of games they've played compared to most of the country.

If Virginia Tech can take care of the basketball and create some turnover points along the way, they should be alright. They have more contributors with more consistent scoring ability than Clemson, but taking care of the basketball will be more important than shooting as many shots as possible.

Clemson-Virginia Tech Predictions

Clemson seems to be the more trustworthy team between the two, even though Virginia Tech seems to have consistency on the offensive end. It does seem likely both will touch 60 points in this one, based on Virginia Tech seeing many offensive outputs and Clemson scoring a lot due to forced turnovers.

Clemson going UNDER in four of its last five does make the point total a bit weary, but 125 is very low. Both schools touching 60 points should see the point total go OVER, which seems likely.

  • Score Prediction: Virginia Tech 66 Clemson 65
  • Best Bets: Virginia Tech
  • Best Bets: Clemson 1H
  • Best Bets: OVER 125
