Texas Tech Red Raiders vs. Tennessee Volunteers Predictions

The Red Raiders are looking to bounce back after suffering their first loss of the season at Providence on Wednesday night, 72-68, failing to cover a 2.5-point number as the OVER connected. It was the first true road game of the season for TTU. The OVER has now hit in three of the past four games overall.

Texas Tech failed to cover last time out, but they haven’t posted non-covers at any point so far this season, going 4-3 ATS overall.

The Volunteers are coming off an impressive 69-54 road win against Colorado, easily covering a 5.5-point number on Saturday in Boulder as the UNDER cashed. Tennessee has covered in consecutive games for the first time this season, although hitting the number against Presbyterian last Tuesday at Thompson-Boling Arena.

Texas Tech Red Raiders Betting Analysis

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 6-1
  • ATS: 4-3
  • O/U: 5-2

Texas Tech heads into this game with a winning record against the number, going 4-3 ATS in seven games overall. The Red Raiders will be playing in their second neutral-site affair this season. The Red Raiders won 84-62 against Incarnate Word at the South Padre Island Convention center on Nov. 20, failing to cover a 29.5-point number as the OVER connected.

In the past two seasons, Texas Tech has played a total of six neutral-site games, splitting the pair straight up while going 1-5 ATS. The UNDER is also 4-2 in those outings. The Red Raiders have managed to cover just two of the past nine neutral-site games overall.

The Red Raiders put up plenty of offense, and they pretty strong on the defensive end. Texas Tech rank 12th in the nation with 85.4 PPG, while hitting 49.2% from the field. If they have an Achilles’ heel, it’s at the free-throw line, where the Red Raiders are converting at just a 68.5% clip. Defensively, this team allows just 59.5 PPG to check in 38th in the country. Oddly enough, the opposition is hitting 35.3% from long distance against the Red Raiders, which is just 279th in the country defensively.

Tennessee Volunteers Betting Analysis

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 6-1
  • ATS: 4-3
  • O/U: 4-3

The Volunteers have covered the number in consecutive games for the first time this season. The UNDER has hit in each of those outings, too, limiting the opposition to just 49.0 PPG. Overall, Tennessee has won four consecutive games while going 3-1 ATS.

Last time out, Tennessee was held to just 69 points, its second-lowest offensive total of the season, but they were still able to grind out the win. The Vols were an abysmal 25% from behind the arc, or just 6-of-24, while also hitting only 5-of-9 from the free-throw line. The good news is that Tennessee turned it over just nine times in Boulder.

The Volunteers split their first two neutral-site games this season, losing to Villanova by a 71-53 score on Nov. 20 as the UNDER hit, before bouncing back for an 89-72 border-war win over North Carolina on Nov. 21. Both games were played at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.

There’s not much to glean from Tennessee’s neutral-site showings in the past few seasons, as they’re just 4-4 SU/ATS in the previous eight games overall, while also splitting the OVER-UNDER 4-4.

Texas Tech Red Raiders vs. Tennessee Volunteers Betting Conclusion

The Volunteers have had a handful of tests so far this season, and they have passed a couple of them. The Villanova loss can be excused, as that was their first real big game. They showed a lot of fight, bouncing back in the following game to pound North Carolina. The win at Colorado last time out also shouldn’t be discounted, as that’s a long trip, and the Buffaloes aren’t a bad team.

The Red Raiders had scored 84 or more points in six straight games to open the season, so the 68-point showing in Providence was shocking. They’ll bounce back, but they’ll find the sledding much tougher against a much better Tennessee team. Look for the Red Raiders to drop a second consecutive outing here.
