Seton Hall Pirates vs. Providence Friars Predictions

The Pirates have won nine of their first 10 games straight-up. This run includes quality victories against Michigan as eight-point underdogs and Texas as slight two-point favorites. The lone loss came against Ohio State on Nov. 22. They have been idle since beating Rutgers by 14 points on Dec. 12 due to multiple game postponements.

Providence has been as equally successful through the first two months of season at 11-1 SU. This includes a tight four point win as a 7.5-point road underdog against Connecticut on Dec. 18 in its Big East opener. The Friars’ only setback this season was a loss to Virginia on Nov. 23. They have won their last six games SU since that defeat.

I am giving the edge to Providence in this game playing on its home court. The recent road win against Connecticut was impressive to say the least. I also have some concern with Seton Hall’s extended layoff. A slow start due to some lingering rust would give the Friars an added edge in this game.

Seton Hall Pirates Betting Analysis

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 9-1
  • ATS: 6-3
  • O/U: 4-5

On paper, Seton Hall appears to bet the better all-around team with a stronger power ranking but that is why they play the games. The Pirates have covered against the spread in their last four games to improve to 7-3 ATS on the year. The total has gone OVER in four of their last five outings behind an 80.1-point scoring average.

The team’s only major injury concern is guard Myles Cale with a groin strain. He was fourth on the team in scoring with 9.7 points per game. Guard Jared Rhoden has had the hottest hand through 10 games with 17.4 PPG. He is shooting 41.9% from the field but that percentage drops to 26.5 from three-point range. Rhoden also leads the team in rebounds with 7.3 a game.

Guard Bryce Aiken (11.2 point) and forward Tyrese Samuel (10.8 points) are the next two highest scorers. Aiken is the team’s best pure shooter at 44.4% from the field and Samuel is adding another 6.9 rebounds a game.

Seton Hall is connecting on 45.6% of its shots from the field as a team. It is shooting 32.1% from three-point range. Rebounding has been solid with 40.6 a game and the Pirates are holding opposing teams to 61.9 points a game on defense.

Providence Friars Betting Analysis

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 11-1
  • ATS: 8-4
  • O/U: 5-7

Providence had its last game postponed against Georgetown, so it has been idle for 11 days. The Friars have been able to cover ATS in eight of their first 12 games this season. This includes 5-1 run in their last six contests. The total has stayed UNDER in the last four games after going OVER in five of the first seven matchups.

Center Nate Watson has led the way in scoring with 14.8 points with Providence averaging 69.8 PPG. His 5.6 rebounds a game is second to forward Noah Horchler with a team-high 7.9. Watson has struggled from the free throw line at just 53.3%.

Guards’ Al Durham (12.9 points) and AJ Reeves (11.2 point) round out the top three scorers on the team. Reeves is the most consistent three-point shooter at 37.7%. He has connected on 28 of his team-high 74 attempts.

Providence is shooting 44.5% from the field and 32.2% from outside the three-point line. It has converted on 70.9% of its shots from the free throw line. The Friars are pulling down 36.6 rebounds a game, including 9.7 on offense. At the other end of the court, they are allowing an average of 61.5 PPG on defense.

Seton Hall Pirates vs. Providence Friars Betting Conclusion

Seton Hall gets the slight 6-4 SU edge over the past 10 meetings with Providence going 6-3-1 ATS. The total has been evenly split at 5-5 in those games.

You can expect another close, hard-fought matchup on Wednesday night with each side trying to stake their claim in the Big east as a nationally-ranked team. I am giving the Friars the clear edge at home, riding a SU 11-game winning streak in front of the hometown crowd.

Seton Hall is 11-5 ATS in its last 16 road games against Providence which is something to keep in mind. While I do think the Friars will cover, the best bet could be Providence SU on the money line.
