BAYLOR BEARS VS. TEXAS TECH RED RAIDERS PREDICTIONS

The seventh ranked Baylor Bears are on a two-game winning streak after defeating the Texas Longhorns 80-63 this past Saturday. The Bears shot 50% from the field and were able to out rebound the Longhorns 42-32. The win gives Baylor a 3-2 record on the season against ranked opponents. The Bears are currently in second place in the Big 12 with a 9-3 conference record, just one game behind Kansas for the top spot.

The 11th ranked Texas Tech Red Raiders enter this matchup after defeating TCU 82-69. The Red Raiders forced 20 turnovers and shot 53.8% from the field and 55.6% from beyond the arc. Texas Tech has now won four of their last five games and a win against Baylor would boost their record against ranked opponents to 6-3. The Red Raiders are third in the Big 12 with an 8-4 conference record, one game behind Baylor for second place.

The first matchup between these two teams resulted in Texas Tech winning 65-62. This should be another close game that comes down to the final possessions. While it's tough to beat a team twice in one season, I give the slight edge to Texas Tech because of home-court advantage. The Red Raiders have not lost at home all season and have posted a 12-3 ATS-home record. Backing Texas Tech in this one at -1.5.

BAYLOR BEARS BETTING ANALYSIS

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 21-4
  • ATS: 14-10-1
  • O/U: 13-11-1

Baylor has been profitable on the year with a 14-10-1 ATS record. The Bears are 5-2 ATS in their last seven games against Big 12 opponents, but failed to cover against Texas Tech earlier in the season as 11.5-point favorites. The total has gone over in 14 of Baylor’s 25 games, but has gone under in five of the last seven games when playing Texas Tech on the road.

The Bear's offense has not been an easy task for defenses to handle. Coming into this matchup Baylor is averaging 77.9 PPG (37th), 16.5 APG (17th), 47.1 FG% (35th), 35.8 3PT% (75th), and 37.7 RPG (64th). The Bear’s offense is led by senior guard James Akinjo, who is averaging 13.1 PPG, 2.5 RPG, and 5.7 APG. In their first matchup against Texas Tech, Baylor had 14 turnovers compared to 12 by Texas Tech. A minor difference, but when you replay the game, the turnovers were the difference maker between a win and a loss.

Baylor’s defense has looked excellent throughout the season. The Bears are allowing 62.2 PPG (24th), 42.3 FG% (137th), 30.2 3PT% (44th), while averaging 9.4 SPG (11th), and 3.5 BPG (139th). The only noticeable downside from Baylor’s defense in their first matchup was allowing Texas Tech to shoot 50.9% from the field. Besides that, the Bears forced 12 turnovers, won the rebounding battle, and only allowed Texas Tech to shoot 28.6% from three.

TEXAS TECH RED RAIDERS BETTING ANALYSIS

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 19-6
  • ATS: 17-8
  • O/U: 12-13

The Texas Tech Red Raiders have rewarded bettors with a 17-8 ATS record, and they have been even more impressive at home with a 12-3 ATS-home record. The Red Raiders are 11-2 ATS in their last 13 games and have gone 7-0 ATS in their last seven home games. The total has gone over 12 times in Texas Tech’s 25 games and has gone under in five of the last seven when playing Baylor at home.

Texas Tech likes to spread the ball around on offense with seven players averaging five or more points. As a team, the Red Raiders are averaging 73.5 PPG (118th), 13.8 APG (138th), 46.7 FG% (50th), 31.8 3PT% (292nd), and 37.1 RPG (78th). A key part of Texas Tech’s offensive success has been senior forward Bryson Williams, who is averaging 13.4 PPG, 4.5 RPG, and 1 APG. Williams has 13 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists in the matchup against Baylor earlier in the season.

The Red Raiders defense has been a huge factor in their success this season. Entering this matchup they are allowing 60.5 PPG (13th), 38.4 FG% (11th), 31.3 3PT% (83rd), while averaging 8 SPG (58th), and 3.6 BPG (126th). Texas Tech is scoring an average of 18 PPG off of turnovers, so expect the turnover battle to be a key factor in this game.

Baylor is 13-3 SU in its last 16 road games. (AP)

BAYLOR BEARS VS. TEXAS TECH RED RAIDERS BETTING CONCLUSION

Both teams have been playing great basketball this season. Baylor has been an offensive powerhouse while Texas Tech’s has been locking it down on defense. Baylor has lost two of their four games on the road and the Red Raiders have been perfect at home. This is the difference maker for me in this one. Taking the Red Raiders –1.5 at home, in what should be a great matchup
