Betting on the Seton Hall Pirates

As a member of the Big East, Seton Hall basketball has a strong following of both sports fans and bettors alike. Natural rivalries against other programs in that conference only add to this team’s overall appeal.

Seton Hall basketball has a long history of excellence. This reputation goes hand-in-hand with the high recognition this university receives overall. Dating all the way back to the early 1900’s, this is also one of the oldest college basketball programs in the nation.

From 1908 all the way through the 1964/1965 season, Seton Hall played as an Independent. Following a brief four-year stint in the Metropolitan Collegiate Conference, the team resumed its status as an Independent program.

The Pirates also played three seasons in the NJNY7 until finding a permanent home in the Big East ahead of the 1979/1980 season.

The overall makeup of the Big East has gone through some major changes over the years. However, Seton Hall has established itself as a mainstay in this highly regarded basketball conference.

The most successful basketball season in this team’s history was 1989. Led by famous head coach PJ Carlesimo, the Pirates went all the way to the championship game of that season’s NCAA Tournament. Facing the Big Ten’s Michigan Wolverines, they came up one point short in an 80-79 loss.

Seton Hall was a Sweet 16 team in 2000 with Tommy Amaker as head coach. More recently, the Pirates made it to the second round of the 2018 NCAA Tournament with Kevin Willard at the helm. They have been a No. 10 seed or lower in all 13 of their prior appearances in that tournament.

Given the current makeup of the Big East, a natural rivalry has formed against the Villanova Wildcats in neighboring Pennsylvania. You could also add Connecticut to that list with the Huskies returning to the Big East in 2020. The St. John’s Red Storm are another natural rivalry as a New York City-based team.

Since each Big East team tends to play each other twice in the regular season, betting home favorites on the point spread is a popular option.

If you are betting on the Pirates in a legal state, you're in luck and there are plenty of options when placing your bets. A common strategy when betting on basketball is wagering on the spread. A spread looks similar to this:

  • Seton Hall   -4.5
  • St Johns +4.5

A bettor wagering on Seton Hall -4.5 needs them to win the game by 5 points or more to win their bet. On the other side, a bettor who wagered on St Johns +4.5 can have the team lose by 4 points or less, and even win the game to collect their winnings.

Betting on the Seton Hall Pirates in New Jersey

Since 2018, New Jersey has grown into one of the biggest legal sports betting markets in the country. However, the Garden State does have some specific rules in place when it comes to betting on in-state college teams.

It is legal to bet on college teams such as Seton Hall when they are playing outside of New Jersey. It remains illegal to bet on in-state teams if they are playing at home.

For example, you could legally place a bet on Seton Hall’s upcoming road game against Villanova. However, when the Wildcats come to South Orange to play the Pirates, that game remains “off the board” at New Jersey sportsbooks.
