The Oklahoma State Cowboys are 2-0, but they about to face their toughest test in non-conference action before starting Big 12 play next week. Oklahoma State must go on the road to face a program that has made a name for itself knocking off Power Five teams in Boise State. The Broncos are 1-1, yet they are a short home favorite against the Cowboys on Saturday night.

Spencer Sanders was not sharp last week against Tulsa. Sanders missed the season opener against Montana State due to COVID protocols, and it was thought he would give this offense a spark against the Golden Hurricane. However, he threw a crucial pick-six that led to last week’s game being tied at halftime and struggled with his accuracy throughout the narrow 28-23 win over Tulsa.

This might be Mike Gundy’s worst offense yet in Stillwater. Currently, Oklahoma State ranks 67th on offense in Bill Connelly’s SP+. The Cowboys are playing four freshmen at receiver, and the running backs have really struggled. If you take out Sanders and Week 1 QB Shane Illingworth, Oklahoma State has run the ball 59 times for 139 yards through its first two games.

Boise State has no such worries on offense. The Broncos have one of the better quarterbacks in the country in Hank Bachmeier. Bachmeier is completing 66.7% of his passes for 603 yards (9.6 YPA) with four touchdowns and one interception this season.

He also has a future NFL receiver in Khalil Shakir. Shakir made the highlight reels last Friday night with some of his catches against UTEP, and he is one of the best receivers in the country. Shakir was a PFF Preseason All-American and is living up to the hype with 12 receptions for 257 yards and two touchdowns.

The big news for the Broncos is that the ground game will finally get its best weapon back in full force. George Holani didn’t play the opener against UCF and only had five carries against UTEP last week, but Andy Avalos announced that Boise State’s best running back will be off a snap count on Tuesday. Holani missed almost all of last year due to injury but ran for 1,014 yards (5.3 YPC) and seven touchdowns in 2019.
