A Sun Belt showdown on Wednesday night sees the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers and their undefeated record head to the mountains and take on the Appalachian State Mountaineers. Kick off is set for 7:30 p.m. ET and will air on ESPN2 from Kidd Brewer Stadium in Boone, North Carolina.

Coastal Carolina Chanticleers vs. Appalachian State Mountaineers Predictions

There are many trends supporting the Chanticleers here, which might not even be needed just looking at what's given. The Mountaineers haven't had a bad season by any means, but Miami-Florida is revealing itself to be mediocre at best while App State was just destroyed by rivals Louisiana. Coastal Carolina has the better roster on both sides of the football, then the added trends (along with a short spread) makes this a bit more simple then it may seem.

Coastal Carolina has covered eight of its last 10 road games, along with covering four of its last six games and 11 of its last 16 overall. Appalachian State has failed to cover the spread in four of its last six home games and an eye-opening 13 of its last 19 games overall. Add in to account that the Mountaineers' offense seems to struggle against good defenses, the Chanticleers enter Boone with the eight-fewest points allowed per game in the country.

Coastal also touts an impressive 48.8 points per game on offense. How impressive? It ranks first nationally, now facing a defense allowing 40-plus points to Louisiana and allowing 23.5 points per game - which ranks 60th. It is possible that App State has the offensive fire power to hang around with Coastal, but it's likely the Chanticleers pull away at some point and cover a relatively low point spread for the difference of talent in these teams (and season performance in general).

The point total market is a bit murky, as Coastal has gone UNDER in four of six road games but the market has actually gone OVER in three of the last four meetings. Don't over think this as the more talented and favored team should cover a low spread. Coastal Carolina ranks top 10 nationally on both sides of the football, so play the smart odds here and back the better team.

The defense might have a field day, much as Louisiana did. The reason being that Appalachian State is depleted in the back field, with injuries to multiple running backs. Even if some of the backs play for App State, they are a pass heavy offense which allows good defenses to pin their ears back and rush the pass freely. This will require a good game from the secondary, who shockingly only has one interception on the season.

The strength to the nation's No. 8 defense is the pass rush. Jeffrey Gunter, C.J. Brewer, Josaiah Stewart and Teddy Gallagher have combined for 12 of the team's 16 sacks. Grayson McCall is the key to the nation's No. 1 offense.

McCall enters with an impressive 79.8% completion percentage while also averaging 13.6 yards per pass. His touchdown-to-interception ratio is also impressive at 14:1, also adding two scores on the ground. Three running backs produce as well with Reese White, Shermani Jones and Braydon Bennett all with four or more touchdowns and averaging 7.1 yards or more per carry.

McCall has some nice targets too, as Jaivon Heiligh and Isaiah Likely are both over 500 yards for the season and combine for 12 of McCall's 14 aerial touchdowns (Likely with eight). There doesn't seem to be too much of a weakness in this team, and with one or two tough opponents added to the schedule could be a serious threat to reach the CFB Playoffs but unlikely with the given schedule this season.

Appalachian State Mountaineers Betting Analysis

It will be difficult for App State to keep pace in this game, for the reasons discussed above and especially true to the Chanitcleers play up to their eight-ranked defensive caliber. All three running backs are questionable for Appalachian State, so the offensive weapons will be thin and obvious. Corey Sutton now sticks out like a sore thumb in this offense, and will be the main focus for Coastal's defense.

The Mountaineers will have Mailk Williams and Thomas Hennigan on the field to make plays, but it won't be enough for 60 full minutes. Chase Brice will also have to play mistake free football, which is he capable of. He completes 66.1% of his passes which is good enough to win, along with his 8.3 yards per pass. Again though, he will have to play above those numbers to keep pace with the nation's best offense. Down a few running backs, it will be difficult.

The defense is capable of limiting this Coastal offense though, as the secondary has seen four different players record an interception, while forcing three fumbles to go along with 14.5 total sacks. D'Marco Jackson will have to elevate his already impressive play, entering with a team-high four sacks and an interception.

Even if the App State running backs are able to go, it seems like an uphill battle to score with Coastal's offense. The Chanitcleers defense is actually the key for this game. If they continue to limit points allowed then it's unlikely the Mountaineer defense can keep the game close and low-scoring. The Mountaineers are also ATS failures at home lately.

Go with the better team and the trends - which say Coastal has covered the spread in four of six games and eight of 10 on the road, while APp State has failed to cover four of six in Boone and 13 of 19 overall.
