Clemson Tigers vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish Picks, Predictions, and Odds

The Clemson Tigers cannot afford a loss if they are going to make the College Football Playoff given their strength of schedule. They will face their toughest remaining test this weekend when they go on the road to face the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. These teams will meet at Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend, Indiana on Saturday, November 5, 2022, at 7:30 p.m. ET on NBC.

Clemson Tigers vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish Betting Prediction

As long as the Clemson Tigers continue to win, they will probably make the College Football Playoff. However, Dabo Swinney and the Tigers know they will be in a precarious position if they happen to lose given the state of the ACC. They need to stay unbeaten to be one of the four teams with a shot at winning the national championship, and they will play their last true road game of the season on Saturday when they face the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Clemson's next three games are all at home before a probable berth in the ACC Championship Game.

Clemson Tigers Betting Analysis

D.J. Uiagalelei has improved considerably after his dismal 2021 season. While Uiagalelei won't remind anyone of Deshaun Watson or Trevor Lawrence, he has improved considerably in his second year as the starter for Clemson. He is completing 64.1% of his passes for 1,803 yards (7.7 YPA) with 17 touchdowns and four interceptions. Uiagalelei is playing more within the offense, and he isn't trying to make hero throws like he did last season. Additionally, he is the second leading rusher on the team with 350 yards and four touchdowns, and he is averaging 3.9 YPC.

It's been impressive to watch Will Shipley pick up where he left off at the tail end of last season. Shipley is the leading rusher on Clemson, running for 739 yards and 10 touchdowns, while averaging 6.0 YPC. Shipley has a surprising amount of athleticism for a player his size, and that has made him a bit of a threat in the passing game too. Antonio Williams and Joseph Ngata are the two receivers to watch when Uiagalelei takes to the air.

Clemson is ranked 14th in Defensive SP+. Myles Murphy has been excellent and leads the Tigers with 5.5 sacks, but Bryan Bresee hasn't had that much of an impact. Still, this defense has been solid in its first season without defensive coordinate Brent Venables, and the Tigers are allowing just 4.7 yards per play. It's been tough for opponents to run on this front seven, but some quarterbacks have had success through the air against Clemson.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish Betting Analysis

Marcus Freeman did not get off to a good start as head coach of Notre Dame. He lost his first two games, and it looked like this could be a dismal season after starting quarterback Tyler Buchner suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in the second game of the season. However, the team was able to rally behind Drew Pyne and has now won five of its last six games. Pyne is completing 61.8% of his passes for 1,193 yards (7.2 YPA) with 13 touchdowns and four interceptions.

Tight end Michael Mayer has been the best target in the passing game by a wide margin. Mayer has 47 receptions for 580 yards and six touchdowns. Only one other player for the Fighting Irish (Lorenzo Styles) has more than 15 receptions. Audric Estime and Logan Diggs are the top two running backs on the roster for Notre Dame.

Notre Dame is ranked 28th in Defensive SP+. Isaiah Foskey has been a force of nature along the defensive line with seven sacks, and that has lessened the loss of Kyle Hamilton to the NFL. Unfortunately, the Irish haven't been able to force a lot of mistakes, as they rank close to the bottom of the FBS with just five takeaways.
