At the Gate – Thursday

Pre-entries for the Breeders’ Cup were announced this morning and past performances are in hand (well, in my iPad), so let the fun begin.

There was a record of 221 horses entered in the 14 races, with only two races failing to fill completely, only the Juvenile Fillies and the Distaff failed to overfill, but those races drew 11 and 12 entries.

There were 19 horse entered the marquee race, the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) and there will be some good horses on the outside looking in. Among those not getting into the field are Bravazo. Gunnevera, Seeking the Soul and Collected.

The Euro invasion is on, with 51 runners that are based overseas pre-entered including 18 by trainer Aiden O’Brien.

There are still some decisions to be made, as 25 horses were pre-entered in two races, and connections will have to state their intentions next Monday, so the fields are not quite set yet. Post positions will be drawn on Monday.

There are five former or defending Breeders’ Cup champions that are pre-entered: Mendelssohn, 2017 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G1), Oscar Performance, 2016 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G1), Roy H, 2017 Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1), Stormy Liberal, 2017 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (G1) and Talismanic, 2017 Longines Breeders' Cup Turf (G1).

The two stars from overseas that figure to get plenty of attention are two-time Arc winner Enable, who goes in the Turf and Roaring Lion, who will be making his first career start on dirt in the Classic. The colt is entered in the Turf as well, but his connections are leaning toward the dirt race.

Here is the opener from Belmont Park to get the day off to a good start:

BEL Race 1 Md $25,000 (1:30 ET)
#6 Ramblin' Ma'am 6-1
#3 Promises Me Roses 6-5
#7 Zecha 8-5
#5 Aly's All Out 4-1

Analysis: Ramblin' Ma'am made a good late rally to finish third beaten two lengths last out here of this tag in her last outing. She caught a racing strip that day that was kind to inside speed. The Summers trainee did not show much in her first two starts but has gradually been showing some life in her last couple of starts and looks headed in the right direction form wise. She is out of a Quiet American mare that has dropped three other foals to race, all winners. Among the top three in here this gal is going to offer the best value for the top spot and just needs to see some pace in front of her.

Promise Me Roses stalked the early pace and finished evenly in a fourth-place finish last out against maiden special weight foes and drops back in for a tag here for the Martin barn. This gal ran into repeat winners four of her first five starts. Two back at this tag she pressed the early pace and finished gamely in a runner up finish in a key race that has produced three next out winners including the winner Thirsty Gal who beat Alw-2L foes at Finger Lakes in her next start. She looks tough here but is going to be a short price.

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Belmont Park:

BEL Race 7 Clm $40,000N2L (4:42 ET)
#6 Tiz R Bella 5-1
#3 Sweet August Lady 2-1
#5 Critique 4-1
#10 Tayler's the Boss 10-1

Analysis: Tiz R Bella returns off a three month break here for the Bond barn. Last out the filly was outrun early and made a mild late rally to finish fifth at this level going a mile, beaten 4 1/2 lengths. Two back she also was fifth while beaten 2 3/4 lengths. She had a good breeze over the Oklahoma training track at the Spa on Oct. 15 for Bond who is 16% winners with runners coming back off a 90+ layoff. It is not a real tough spot and there is enough early pace signed up she should get an honest pace in front of her.

Sweet August Lady was making a good late rally, tried to split foes at the eighth pole and was squeezed back and then battled on right to the wire to miss by a head. That outing was over yielding ground at seven furlongs and her maiden win came at a mile here last June in her second career start. Brown is 30% winners moving runners from sprint to route.
