At the Gate – Wednesday

We are back in action at Aqueduct on Wednesday and thankfully there are just two races scheduled to go on the turf.

I have lost count of how many races over the past month have been moved off the turf, and the NYRA just kept on carding five races a day on turf despite constant rain and cold temperatures.

There was some rain on Monday, but it was clear and windy on Tuesday and I am hoping that will be enough to get our two turf races in this afternoon.

The first is a maiden special weight race going a mile which is the fourth race on the card. The other is the sixth race on the card, a maiden special weight race for three-year-olds and upward.

I am looking forward to handicapping Saturday’s card at the Big A which features four graded stakes, all on the main track. The highlight is the $750,000 Cigar Mile (G1).

Also on the card is the $250,000 Remsen (G2) which is a Road to the Kentucky Derby points race. It looked as if Code of Honor was going to be the favorite, but after a Monday work his connections have said they will skip the race.

The colt would have been a contender for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) but spiked a fever and missed the race. His trainer Shug McCaughey said yesterday he did not like the colt’s energy level and would be shipped to Florida to get ready for his three-year-old campaign.

It looks as if the field for the Remsen could come up light. Among those probable include Nashua (G3) runner up Network Effect, maiden winner Bourbon War and the undefeated Parx shipper Maximus Mischief.

With the announcement of Code of Honor skipping the race there could be some last-minute additions to the field. Entries will be drawn this afternoon.

Now is the perfect time to purchase my Monthly Package for just $99.95. It gives you a month of Aqueduct daily and my Best Plays Report each Saturday and Sunday.

Here is the opener from Aqueduct to get the day off to a good start:

AQU Race 1 Md $40,000 (12:20 ET)
#5 There He Goes 9-2
#7 Bourbon N Rye 5-2
#3 Our American Star 8-5
#1 Cross Multiply 7-2

Analysis: There He Goes was the beaten chalk last out when coming back off a year layoff for this tag. The gelding prompted the early pace and weakened to finish third, placed second via a DQ. That foe came back to graduate in his next outing. His previous five starts before going on the bench were on turf, one outing where he was beaten just a nose in a tough beat at 12-1. Irad sticks for De La Cerda and this guy figures to move forward second off the bench.

Bourbon N Rye dueled for the early lead and faded to finish a well beaten sixth last out and drops in for a tag for the first time here in his fourth career start. He owns solid early and mid pace numbers. The cut back to six furlongs should suit him. The Hennig trainee is out of a Ghostzapper mare that has dropped two other foals to race with one winner.

Wagering
WIN: #5 to win at 7-2 or better.
EX: 5,7 / 1,3,5,7
TRI: 5,7 / 1,3,5,7 / 1,2,3,5,7

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Aqueduct:

AQU Race 8 OClm $62,500N2X (3:47 ET)
#7 Mr. Buff 9-5
#4 Hammerin Aamer 3-1
#3 Snap Decision 4-1
#2 Testosterstone 12-1

Analysis: Mr. Buff set the early fractions and battled on gamely in the stretch to hold on and prevail by a head over Alw-1 foes here going nine furlongs. He did it over a racing strip where the outer paths were best. He steps up a notch here and looks capable of winning right back. He owns the edge in early and mid pace numbers and has landed in the exacta in five of his seven trips over the Big A main track.

Hammerin Aamer pressed the early pace while down along the inside and weakened to finish fourth last out at this level. The winner Plainsman came back to win the Discovery (G3) in his next outing on Nov. 23 although he only had to beat three foes. The RRod runner is not proven at nine furlongs and is 0 for 5 over the main track here, but his best puts him in the mix here.
