At the Gate – Wednesday

We start the second week of the Saratoga meeting and after four days of the meeting and we have seen some interesting trends.

Trainer Chad Brown ran away with the training title last summer with 46 winners, hitting at a 27% clip. Trainer Todd Pletcher got off to a slow start at the meeting and finished second in the trainer standings with 19 winners, winning at just a 15% clip.

After the first four days of this meeting, Brown is just 2 for 17, although his stock has been running well, 14 of his 17 starters landing in the money.

His two wins were with Sistercharlie in the Diana (G1) where he started four runners, and Sayaaff broke his maiden in his fourth career start at 4-5.

Pletcher has started off the meeting going 1 for 14. His winner was with Sweet Melania, who broke her maiden in her third career start and returned $5.20.

Pletcher is 0 for 2 with his first time starters and he went 1 for 23 with his juvenile first timers here last summer.

The jockey race figures to be a tight one, with Irad Ortiz and Jose Lezcano each picking up five wins during the first week of the meet. Javier Castellano, Jose Ortiz and Junior Alvarado each have four wins.

We may have to dodge some rain today. There is a good chance of thunderstorms most of the day on Wednesday.

Here is the second race (the opener is a steeplechase race) from Saratoga to get the day off to a good start:

SAR Race 2 The Rick Violette (1:25 ET)
#1 Theitalianamerican 3-1
#3 Mission Wrapitup 7-5
#2 Listentoyourheart 8-5
#4 Sky of Hook 6-1

Analysis: Theitalianamerican raced last early and came with a good six wide run to rally and finish in the runner up spot in the Tremont. The ridgling caught a racing strip that was playing to inside speed. He is back in with state breds here and should get an honest early pace to run at. Among the top three in this short field he is likely going to offer the best value. A decent enough off track pedigree.

Mission Wrapitup was a smart looking maiden winner in his debut, drawing off to win by 8 1/4 lengths at 12-1. He should be right in the mix early in this spot and the colt has a decent off track pedigree, by Mission Impazible out of a Hard Spun mare.

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Saratoga:

SAR Race 9 OClm $62,500N2X (5:45 ET)
#2 Carrera Cat 5-1
#1 Special Relativity 12-1
#6 Tale Veuve to Me 1-1
#5 Honor Way 9-2

Analysis: Carrera Cat took the field gate to wire in the slop to beat Alw-1 foes last out, her fourth win in a row. It took her eight tries to break her maiden, then she zipped through her first two state bred conditions and then open company last out. She owns a good edge in early and mid pace numbers and has run well in all three of her starts on off tracks which she may catch again here.

Special Relativity tracked the early pace and finished up well in a runner up finish last out in the slop at Churchill Downs versus Alw-3 optional claimers. She drops a notch back in to face Alw-2 foes here and she won at this condition three back at Oaklawn Park. She won twice here last summer, beating Alw-1 foes and then taking a $50,000 starter allowance race. She has handled off tracks and is in good hands whit the Diodoro barn. Decent value if she goes off near her 12-1 morning line.
