At the Gate – Friday

In yesterday’s column I noted how the Aqueduct main track was playing to outside stalkers and closers much of the past two weeks. Of course, well know what happed yesterday.

Speed did not fare well in nine of the previous 14 days at Aqueduct, but yesterday the first two winners went gate to wire and horses on or near the lead won seven of the eight races on the card.

It looked difficult to make up much ground in the stretch, and the runner that had the lead heading for home was not passed in any of the races on the card.

It will be interesting to see if speed continues to be good over the next couple of days over the Big A surface.

The feature coming upon Saturday is the $100,000 Say Florida Sandy. The race is at seven furlongs for New York bred runners that drew a field of seven.

The Michelle Nevin trained My Boy Tate is the 5-2 morning line favorite. The gelding returned off a year layoff on Nov. 24, winning a New York Stallion Series race in the slop at seven furlongs.

We also will head out to Santa Anita for Saturday’s Best Plays Report. We have a pair of stakes on tap—the $100,000 Las Ciengas (G3) which drew a field of just five and the $200,000 La Canada which drew a field of eight fillies and mares that will go 1 1/16 miles on the main track.

Here is the opening race from Aqueduct to get the day off to a good start:

AQU Race 1 Md $20,000 (12:50 ET)
#5 Crypto Gold 6-1
#3 Plebe 10-1
#6 Due West 7-2
#7 Final Say 4-5

Analysis: Crypto Gold
stalked the early pace and faded to finish a well beaten fifth last out against $25,000 foe sin his first start off the claim by the Asmussen barn. The colt was making his first start off a three-month break. He crossed the wire in front last May on turf at Belmont Park against $40,000 foes but was DQ'd. Two back on turf he checked in fourth in a key race in which the winner and third place finisher were next out winners. He was facing tougher and this is going to be his first trip over a fast main track. He is out of the stakes winner New Economy ($442,118) who has dropped four winners, top earner stakes winner New Normal ($216,390).

Plebe stretches out to a mile here after stalking the early pace and finishing evenly in a fourth-place finish going six furlongs in a race taken off the turf. This guy showed some early zip sprinting on turf and there is not much early speed signed up to go here. He has enough pedigree to handle a mile.

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Aqueduct:

AQU Race 7 Alw $25,000s (3:55 ET)
#5 Carrizo 7-2
#7 Miss Jak 7-2
#6 Jump for Joy 6-1
#8 My Roxy Girl 5-2

Analysis: Carrizo
chased the early pace from the outside and finished up well in a runner up finish last out over a wet track that was playing to outside stalkers and closers. The filly has now landed in the exacta in 6 of her 11 starts and makes her third start of her current form cycle. The barn claimed her for $25,000 and she bat $50,000 starter allowance foes in her second start for the barn. She looks well spotted here back in with starter allowance company here.

Miss Jak tracked the early pace while saving ground, angled out three wide and finished evenly in a third-place finish last out against $32,000 claimers. The mare was claimed out of her last outing by the Atras barn that is 26% winners first off the claim. She beat $25,000 claimers two back while in the Gonzales barn. She has the perfect running style for the way this surface has been playing the past two weeks.
