At the Gate – Sunday

Arthur’s Hope got the job done as our top pick in yesterday’s feature at Aqueduct, taking the field gate to wire to win the Say Florida Sandy and returning a nice $12.20.

T Loves a Fight completed a $2 recommended exacta that returned $60.00 and we nailed the trifecta that paid $221.50 for $1.

Horologist did not fire as our top pick in the La Canada (G3) at Santa Anita, but my second pick Queen Be to You outgamed Der Lu to the wire and we managed to hit the exacta that paid $31.00.

Sunday’s feature at the Big A is the $100,000 Rego Park for three-year-old state breds who will go 6 ½ furlongs on the main track.

The race drew a small field of five led by Dream Bigger, the even money favorite on the morning line. The colt has landed in the exacta in all five starts including wins in the Notebook and New York Breeders’ Futurity.

I am going to look for a bit more value with Convict (3-1), who took the field gate to wire to break his maiden in his debut effort. He was well backed, sent off at 9-5 and we don’t see that very often with a Gary Contessa first timer. The barn rarely wins with firsters.

Here is the opening race from Aqueduct to get the day off to a good start:

AQU Race 1 Md Sp Wt (12:50 ET)
#7 Sengekontacket 2-1
#5 Common Courtesy 9-5
#6 Elizabeth T 10-1
#4 Make Or Break 6-1

Analysis: Sengekontacket cuts back to seven panels for her third career start. She made a mild late rally to finish third in her debut at six furlongs and then stretched out to a mile last out where she set the early fractions and weakened to finish fourth. She caught a racing strip that was splaying to outside stalkers and closers in that outing. The seven furlongs looks as if it should suit her here. The barn is 28% winners moving runners form route to sprint. This filly is out of a Deputy Minster mare that has dropped 10 winners including a pair of stakes winners, top earner Honey Lake ($266,492).

Common Courtesy debuts for the Mott barn that is 11% winners with first timers. The filly is by Will Take Charge out of a Storm Cat mare that has dropped five foals to race with three winners. Solid looking works including a near bullet drill on Jan. 8. Junior takes the call and this filly looks ready to fire at first asking and not facing a very deep looking group here in her debut.

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Aqueduct:

AQU Race 6 OClm $40,000N2X (3:25 ET)
#7 More Mischief 3-1
#1 She Takes Charge 2-1
#3 Viradia 9-5
#4 Cathy Naz 10-1

Analysis: More Mischief returns off a three-month break here for the Chad Brown barn after getting outrun in the state bred Iroquois last out going 6 1/2 furlongs at Belmont Park. The filly beat state bred Alw-1 foes in the slop two back going seven furlongs in her third try at the condition. This is her first start at a mile but has the pedigree, by Into Mischief out of a Mr. Greeley mare. The barn is 36% winners (with a +ROI) moving runners from sprint to route.

She Takes Charge stalked the early pace from the outside and could not get to the winner Viradia in the stretch in a runner up finish at this level. She caught a racing strip that was playing to inside speed. She made a good late rally to finish in the runner up spot two back as well, burning some money in her last two starts as the beaten chalk. She adds blinkers here and she should get an honest pace in front of her in this spot.

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Santa Anita:

SA Race 7 Md Sp Wt (3:37 PT)
#2 Dipping In 5-2
#5 Going to Vegas 4-1
#3 I Give Up 4-1
#7 Go Big Blue Nation 3-1

Analysis: Dipping In raced at the back of the pack early while saving ground, split rivals and got caught with nowhere to go, bottled up in traffic in the stretch and finishing fifth behind three foes she runs into again today. She can turn the tables with a cleaner trip in her fifth career start, just her second going long on turf. She is out of a Runaway Groom mare that ash dropped six winners and three have won on turf.

Going to Vegas drops back in for a tag after prompting the early pace and tiring to finish seventh last out at Los Al going a mile on the main track. her lone start on turf was at Del Mar two back where she made a good late run to finish third, beaten two lengths. The barn is 16% winners moving runners from dirt to turf and has been very live at the meeting, wining with 7 of his first 17 starters at the meet.
