Horse Races Today: Thursday’s Gulfstream Park Analysis & Odds

Horse Racing Action at TVG!
With Oaklawn Park closing on Saturday the pickings will be slim over the next week, but by the middle of the month we should be back in action at several major racetracks.

Churchill Downs announced they will start their spring meeting on May 16. The Louisville track will race from Thursday until Sunday each week. The Kentucky Derby (G1) has been postponed until Sept 5.

Santa Anita plans on resuming racing on May 15. The track has already released a condition book and are just waiting from county officials to give them the go ahead.

Golden Gate Fields in Northern California did get the okay to start racing on May 14. Delaware Park plans on running starting on May 27, and we could see racing at Lone Star Park, Canterbury Park and Presque Isle Downs in late May or early June.

Monmouth Park kicks off the summer meeting on July 3 and the Del Mar meeting is scheduled to start on July 18.

Racing at night will pick up soon. Charles Town plans on opening on May 14 and Mountaineer Park will start running on May 31.

There is no word on when racing in New York will return. Gov. Andrew Cuomo said he is not in favor of Saratoga having fans in attendance, putting that meeting up in the air.

New York is one of the hardest hit areas of the country. The NYRA said they would like to start racing back up at Belmont Park as early as May 22.

Here is the opening race from Gulfstream Park to get the day off to a good start:

GP Race 1 Md $12,500 (1:00 ET)
#9 Party Dress   15-1
#6 Myfirstexwife   5-2
#2 No No Nina   8-5
#4 Shell Beach Party   10-1

Analysis: Party Dress makes her first start on turf after her three starts have all come in the slop. Note she was well backed in her first two starts, the beaten chalk twice last summer here. She makes her second start off the layoff here for the Gallegos barn and she should take to turf. She is out of a Bertrando mare that ash dropped eight winners and five have won on turf. Worth a look here catching a soft spot she should be a decent price although it may be lighter than her 15-1 morning line.

Myfirstexwife is coming off back to back runner up finishers in her last two outings against $25,000 foes. Two back she s second behind repeat winner Roman City, who came back to beat $25,000 starter optional claimers in her next outing on March 4. The Abreu trainee has put in a couple of good morning drills over the turf at Palm Meadows since her last start. She is a logical threat in this spot. She is out of a Grand Slam mare that has dropped three other foals to race including a couple of turf winners, top earner multiple graded stakes turf winner Home Run Kitten ($514,285).

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Gulfstream Park:

GP Race 7 Clm $16,000 (4:17 ET)
#5 Heir Ball   5-2
#6 Fiber Optic   7-2
#4 Royally Cool   3-1
#1 Midnight Miracle   8-1

Analysis: Heir Ball pressed the early pace, took over the lead heading for home and could not match strides late with the winner in a runner up finish at this tag last out, beaten 3/4 of a length for the top spot. The mare earned a career top speed fig in the effort and since coming back off the long layoff the Rivelli barn won with her for this tag four back and then was in the mix versus state bred Alw-1 optional claimers in her next two starts. She owns a solid pace profile throughout and comes in here sharp.

Fiber Optic exits the same race as our top pick. She caved out the early fractions and weakened in the stretch to finish third. She was making her first start off the claim by the Dibona barn and was claimed again, today going for the Maker barn that is 15% winners first off the claim. She beat $16,000 non-winners of three as the heavy chalk two back. The mare has won her first three trips over the turf here including her debut which came last March. She has shown she does not need the lead and may not get it here as there are a couple of foes in here that look quicker early. She picks up Gaffalione and posted a near bullet drill for the new barn on May 2 here.

Live Longshots:
These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.
