Friday's Picks from Saratoga

After a $18.00 winner in the steeplechase race started off the festivities at Saratoga on Thursday, the chalk started landing, and we saw six of the remaining winners on the card pay $4.90 or less.

The best price in the early Pick 5 was in the final leg at $11.40, the 50-cent payoff coming back at $188.000 which was not terrible considering the first four winners paid $3.60, $3.80, $4.90 and $4.90.

The biggest price on Wednesday’s card was $14.20 and we had six winners pay $8.40 or less, three below even money.

The field sizes have been a bit smaller and it could be more of the same today, and our stakes race drew a field of just six. The $85,000 Skidmore at 5 ½ furlongs on turf including three runners sent out by the Wesley Ward barn including the two favorites.

Golden Pal is the 3-5 morning line favorite. He makes his first start since running second in the Norfolk Stakes (G2) at Royal Ascot back in June. His stablemate Fauci is the 8-5 second choice and was a good looking maiden winner in his second career start.

We have a few competitive stakes coming up on Saturday including the $400,000 Fourstardave Handicap (G1) which drew a field of nine and the winner earns s starting spot in the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1).

Raging Bull is the 5-2 morning line favorite and is coming off a third-place finish at 6-5 in the Makers Mark Mile (G1) at Keeneland in his last outing.

We will head out to Del Mar where Maximum Security will be in action in the $500,000 Pacific Classic (G1). Transferred to the Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert, the colt won the San Diego Handicap (G2) in his first start for the barn.

He is the even money favorite with his main foes being Midcourt (7-2) and Higher Power (3-1) who were second and third in the San Diego. The winner gets a free ticket to the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1).

The $250,000 Del Mar Oaks (G1) drew a solid field of 11 led by morning line favorite Laura’s Light, who won the San Clemente (G2) in her last start, her fifth win in seven career starts.

The $200,00 Del Mar Handicap (G2) also drew a solid field with 11 going to the gate in the 1 3/8-mile test on turf. The winner stamps his ticket to the Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1).

I will have the major stakes action in Saturday’s Best Plays Report.

Here is the opener from Saratoga to get the day off to a good start:

SARATOGA RACE 1 ANALYSIS (1:10 P.M. ET)

SAR Race 1 Md Sp Wt
#6 Advanced Strategy   9-5
#7 Silver Token   2-1
#3 Our Destiny   8-1
#4 Striking Causeway   9-2

Analysis: Advanced Strategy was the beaten favorite last out in his second career start and first on turf. He was returning off a 7 1/2-month layoff and came with a mild late bid to finish fourth, beaten a length. He adds lasix to the mix here for the Jerkens barn. He is out of a Big Brown mare, her first foal to race. He should be tighter second off the bench and Rosario sticks.

Silver Token exits the same race where he pressed the early pace and finished gamely to just miss by a nose as our top pick, a tough beat at 4-1. He makes his third start off the break and has landed in the bottom half of the exacta in three of his last four starts. He owns a solid pace profile throughout and fits well here for DePaz. Looks like a chalky exacta to kick off the day.

SARATOGA RACE 7 ANALYSIS (4:41 P.M. ET)

SAR Race 7 Clm $40,000
#3 Jump for Joy   9-5
#4 I'll Take the Cake   3-1
#5 Flat Awesome Jenny   5-2
#1 Solitary Gem   6-1

Analysis: Jump for Joy pressed the early pace, took over the lead turning for home and finished up well to beat $32,000 claimers last out here. The third-place finisher Archumybaby came back to bat $25,000 foes in her next outing on Aug. 7. The mare makes her third start off the bench here for the Kantarmaci barn and she owns a solid pace profile throughout with the edge in early and mid pace numbers. She looks tough in this spot.

I'll Tale the Cake drops into an easier spot here tagged for $40,00 and cuts back to a sprint. She tired to finish fifth last out against Alw-2 optional claimers. Two back she won the lady Bird at Gulfstream Park going seven furlongs, a starter sake. The runner up in that race was Liza Star who came back to beat Alw-2 foes in her next start and did it again on June 26, then running third here against Alw-3 optional claimers on July 31. The Joseph barn is 21% winners moving runners form route to sprint. She should move forward in her second start off a five month break here for a sharp Florida barn.

LIVE LONGSHOTS

These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.
