HOW TO HANDICAP THE BREEDERS' CUP JUVENILE TURF SPRINT

We ditch the traditional format for alphabetical order due to the mix of U.S. and Euro runners as well as age and lack of experience. Numbers 13 and 14 are also eligible.

English import 7 - ARMOR has been very competitive in Group 1 company overseas at today’s 5 furlong distance and has the tactical speed to stay close from the bell in his first stateside start.

Morning line favorite 8 - AVERLY JANE is unbeaten and relatively untested in her 4 career starts, most recently taking Keeneland’s Indian Summer stakes, a Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint ‘Win and You’re In’ event, in her turf debut. The three time stakes winner is a very quick filly and will look to beat the boys for the fourth time in as many tries today. She’s the one they’ll have to beat.

Filly 11 - DERRYNANE showed a solid pace tracking gear from the outset at Saratoga this past summer and improved her late kick in taking a stake North of the border at Woodbine last time to post. She’ll get plenty of pace in front of her today and looms a serious threat for all the money.

3 - GO BEARS GO took a step back when stretched out to 7 panels at Newmarket but was right there against Group 1 company a couple of times prior to that. He’s got the new surroundings to deal with but is one who figures to benefit from today’s shorter trip and the price will be right.

Lightly raced import 5 - HIERARCHY has given a good account of himself in all 4 of his career starts in England and is another who should like the shorter distance of this heat.

2 - KAUFYMAKER made a solid run to get second money behind her stablemate Averly Jane at Keeneland last time, but she sat a nice trip and still wasn’t able to pose a serious threat for the win.

9 - ONE TIMER is a perfect 3 for 3 over 3 different racetracks and has shown solid early foot each time. Looks like there’s other speed that could make things tough on him here, though.

12 - RUN CURTIS RUN is a speedy New York bred who could be part of the pace after leading fellow restricted runners in his turf debut at Belmont Park, but he may be biting off too much today.

14 - SUMTER is a maiden who has picked a tough spot in which to try and get his first score. Tough to make a serious case for him at any price.

13 - THUNDER LOVE did some early season damage to begin her career overseas but has offered little since being freshened off her second career victory. Hard to recommend.

10 - TIME TO PARTY has been right there in all 3 of his career starts and is the lone entrant with a local course victory to his credit, Still, he’ll need to take a good step forward to get in the mix with this field.

6 - TWILIGHT GLEAMING is another Wesley Ward trainee and was beaten chalk when second in Royal Ascot’s Queen Mary in late Spring. She’s won twice at this 5 panel distance and could find herself in a nice pace tracking spot in her return to the states. Looms very dangerous.

1 - TWILIGHT JET is the field’s most experienced runner and he did get back on track against a softer set at Newmarket last month.

4 - VERTIGINOUS is another speedy filly who ran her career best against the boys in stakes company overseas last time, but she was no match in the Queen Mary back in the Spring.

JUVENILE TURF SPRINT PREDICTIONS

IF I’M RIGHT...

Fresh Wesley Ward trainee 6 - TWILIGHT GLEAMING runs down her ‘Win and You’re In’ stablemate, the undefeated 8 - AVERLY JANE in the final stages of this 5 furlong heat while returning to dry footing for the first time since her maiden victory at Belmont Park last spring. Christophe Clement trained 11 - DERRYNANE rallies to get third money and completes a 1-2-3 filly finish.

Live Longshot

3 - GO BEARS GO may be set for a much improved try while cutting back in distance in his stateside debut and can be tossed into the exotics mix at his 15-1 morning line price.
