Manaea Trade Impacts Padres, Athletics Odds

The Oakland Athletics continued their month-long fire sale on Sunday with the trade of Sean Manaea to the San Diego Padres. Manaea is the fourth big name they have traded away since the lockout was lifted, following in the footsteps of Chris Bassitt, Matt Olson, and Matt Chapman. That has led to the San Diego Padres’ World Series odds falling to 18-1, while Oakland is now seen as one of the cellar dwellers with odds of 200-1.

SAN DIEGO BOLSTERS ITS ROTATION

This is the fifth move that the Padres have made to help their rotation in the past two years. San Diego has one of the best lineups in baseball, and the organization hasn’t been afraid to roll the dice by trading for top starting pitchers.

San Diego acquired Mike Clevinger in a nine-player trade with Cleveland in August 2020. The Padres added Yu Darvish from Chicago in exchange for a package of prospects in late 2020, and the brought in Blake Snell from Tampa Bay at that time too. They acquired Joe Musgrove from Pittsburgh a month later, completely overhauling their rotation.

Musgrove had a fine season in 2021, but Darvish and Snell both struggled. Clevinger didn’t pitch at all as he was recovering from Tommy John surgery, and he will start the season on the IL. There is a lot of potential with this rotation if Darvish and Snell can return to form, as Sean Manaea is a solid third or fourth starter.

The Padres need the rotation to perform better than it did last year since Fernando Tatis could miss the first half of the season with a wrist injury. Tatis is by far the best bat in the lineup, and San Diego won’t be as potent without him.

WHERE DOES THIS LEAVE OAKLAND?

Oakland has some of the longest odds to win the World Series now. The Athletics are 200-1 to win it all, and the only teams with worse odds are Colorado, Arizona, Pittsburgh, and Baltimore.

The Athletics have been slashing payroll over the last month as their future in Oakland is in limbo. They are currently on the hook for just $33 million this season, and that was their total payroll in 1991.

In mid-March, Oakland’s season win total was set at 74.5 games. The Athletics’ trades have led to this number dropping down to 68.5 games as of Sunday evening.
