Tampa Bay Rays vs. Chicago White Sox Betting Predictions

Tampa Bay started off the season by sweeping the Orioles, but then dropped three out of four in their most recent series against the Oakland Athletics. The defense struggled against Oakland, allowing 31 runs while scoring just 16 throughout the four-games. The right-hander Drew Rasmussen is expected to get the start Friday night. Rasmussen has seen action in one game this season and allowed 3 hits, 2 earned runs, and struck out 3 batters in 4.0 innings of work.

The White Sox took two of three in their first series of the season against Detroit and did the same most recently to Seattle. Aside from their 5-1 loss to Seattle on Thursday, Chicago has looked sharp on both offense and defense. Right-handed pitcher Dylan Cease is scheduled to take the mound for the White Sox on Friday. Cease has seen action in one game this season and allowed 2 hits, 1 earned run, and stuck out 8 batters in 5.0 innings pitched.

Both teams enter this game coming off a loss, but I give the slight edge to the Rays on the road here. I think the bats should be a bit more productive for both teams in this one after each scoring five runs over their last two games. I also think Tampa Bay bounces back in this one after losing three of their last four. Backing the Rays moneyline and over 8.5 runs.

Tampa Bay Rays Betting Analysis

  • SU: 4-3
  • RL: 2-5
  • O/U: 3-4

After finishing two series the Rays are 4-3 SU, 2-5 ATS, and have an O/U record of 3-4. Going back to last season the total has gone under in 12 of Tampa Bay’s last 18 games as well as 10 of their last 15 against American League opponents. The Rays have gone 6-3 SU in their last nine games when playing on the road against Chicago.

The bats slowed down a bit for the Rays over the last two games, but have still been solid on the season. As a team they have a batting average of .261 (4th), on base percentage of .318 (12th), slugging percentage of .416 (6th), 7 HR (T-9th), and 31 total runs (5th). First baseman Ji-Man Choi has been a monster to start the season with a batting average of .563 (9-16), two home runs, and six RBI. Shortstop Wander Franco has also been key for the rays with a batting average of .379 (11-25) and four RBI.

The pitching has been average for the Rays to start the season. As a team they are allowing opposing teams a batting average of .231 (17th), have an ERA of 4.08 (18th), given up eight home runs (21st), and 35 total runs (28th). Right-handed pitcher Drew Rasmussen is scheduled to start Friday night. Rasmussen has seen action in one game this season and allowed three hits, two earned runs, and struck out three batters in 4.0 innings of work. Last season Rasmussen was 4-1 with an ERA of 2.84 and struck out 73 batters in 76.0 innings.

Chicago White Sox Betting Analysis

  • SU: 4-2
  • RL: 3-3
  • O/U: 3-3

After finishing their series with the Mariners on Thursday afternoon the White Sox are 4-2 SU, 4-2 ATS, and have an O/U record of 3-3. Going back to last season the total has gone under in five of their last seven games against an American League East opponent. The White Sox have struggled in the past when playing at home against Tampa Bay with a 3-6 SU record over their last nine.

Aside from their one run performance on Thursday, the bats have been better than average for the White Sox. As a team they have a batting average of .246 (22nd), on base percentage of .294 (21st), slugging percentage of .414 (8th), seven HR (T-9th), and 29 total runs scored (6th). Shortstop Tim Anderson has had an excellent start with a batting average of .462 (6-13), one HR, and four RBI’s. Center fielder Luis Robert has also had a strong start with a batting average of .350 (7-20), two HR, and three RBI’s.

Chicago’s pitching has been very good to start the season. As a team they are allowing opponents a batting average of .199 (5th), have an ERA of 3.02 (8th), given up six total home runs (14th), and 19 total runs (6th). The Right-hander Dylan Cease is expected to get the start for the White Sox on Friday. Cease has seen action in one game this season and allowed two hits, an earned run, and stuck out eight batters in 5.0 innings pitched. Last season Cease went 13-7 with a 3.91 ERA and struck out 226 batters in 165.2 innings pitched.

Tampa Bay Rays vs. Chicago White Sox Betting Conclusion

I like the Rays to get a bounce back win in this after losing three of four. They are just too good of a team to continue to lose games. I think both teams will hit the ball better than they have been and push the total over 8.5 runs. This will be the first game of the season that the Rays are underdogs and I think there is great value in that pick. Backing Tampa Bay moneyline and over 8.5 runs here.
