Los Angeles Rams vs. Indianapolis Colts Predictions

Score Prediction - Rams 27 Colts 20

The Rams hit the road for Indianapolis after posting an impressive 34-14 win over the Chicago Bears at SoFi Stadium in front of a raucous crowd. The regular-season debut of QB Matthew Stafford was a smashing success. Now, can he take it on the road and do the same?

The Colts also saw QB Carson Wentz make his regular-season debut, but things didn't go as hot. He suffered a setback in Week 1 against an NFC West foe, losing to the Seattle Seahawks 28-16. The Colts were able to run for 113 yards while posting 223 yards through the air, but the Seahawks were much better with 140 rushing yards and 381 total offensive yards. The good news for Indianapolis was that they were disciplined, committing just two penalties. Unfortunately for the Colts, they also lost a fumble while allowing three sacks. Their red-zone efficiency was at just 50 percent, too, going 2-for-4 inside the opponent's 20.

The Rams covered a 9.5-point number at home against the Bears, and big plays were the order of the day. Stafford made an immediate splash with a 67-yard touchdown to WR Van Jefferson early in the first quarter, and he connected with WR Cooper Kupp for a 56-yard scoring play early in the third quarter. The kicking game was on point, including a 53-yard field goal by Matt Gay, and RB Darrell Henderson rolled up 70 rushing yards and a touchdown while averaging 4.4 yards per attempt. WR Robert Woods also had a receiving touchdown, one of three thrown by Stafford in his team debut.

The Rams went East of the Mississippi on five occasions last season, going 3-2 SU/3-2 ATS. One might argue it could/should have been 4-1 SU/ATS, if you remember a terrible call by the referees in Week 3 in Buffalo which led to a Bills win. The OVER edged out the UNDER 3-2 in those five road outings, too.

The Colts fared very well against the NFC last season, winning all four games while going 4-0 ATS. Those games came against the NFC North, while splitting the OVER/UNDER 2-2. However, the last time these teams met in Los Angeles, it was the Rams posting an impressive 46-9 win on Sept. 10, 2017 in Week 1.

The point total has gone UNDER in five straight games played between Dallas and Tampa Bay. (AP)

Los Angeles Rams vs. Indianapolis Colts Betting Analysis

One interesting trend to note for the Indianapolis Colts concerns the total. The UNDER is a whopping 22-4 in the past 26 games following a double-digit loss at home. Indianapolis lost by 12 points last weekend against the visiting Seahawks, so that trend is in play.

Another interesting trend involves the Rams, who are 8-2-2 ATS in the past 12 games after scoring 30+ points in their previous outing. That makes for an interesting parlay taking the Rams laying the points and playing the UNDER.

Like many bettors, I like what I saw from Stafford. He might finally realize his immense potential playing with head coach Sean McVay, while he is surrounded by a ton of talent at the skill positions. There are no excuses for Stafford not to succeed now. Los Angeles also has an outstanding pass rush and linebacker unit, although the secondary is still a work in progress.

I am not as bullish on Wentz and the Colts. He didn't make a big splash last week, and he is without veteran WR T.Y. Hilton until at least Week 4 due to an injury. The Colts need someone to step up and be a play maker, but only RB Jonathan Taylor looks like a home run hitter on this roster, and he isn't running wild against the Rams.
